Snow blankets the greater Sydney region
Snow has fallen across a large part of NSW and the ACT,closing roads and disrupting public transport.

Goulburn residents woke to snow this morning, as did peoplein Katoomba, Mt Blackheath, Mt Victoria and Mittagong. There have been reportsof snow in the Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands, while Canberrahas received 10 centimetres.

Two major roads have been closed by the snow - The GreatWestern Highway in both directions at Wentworth Falls, and Bell'sLine of Road at mt Tomah. Sydney Ferries has cancelled the Manly service due tothe weather, and trains and buses have also been affected.

Yesterday, South Australiawitnessed a once-in-a-century October snowfall.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the snow is a result of avery cold air mass that has moved across NSW. The air mass has caused a deeplow to form on the south coast which has produced the snow.

Bureau forecaster Ewen Mitchell says although the snowfallis unusual, it is not unheard of at this time of year.

"I don't think there's been hugely heavy falls. [It'sbeen] fairly widespread," he said. "It's certainly not recordbreaking in terms that it's happened before."

The snowfall is expected to ease into showers around midday.

Katoomba resident Dawn told 702 ABC Sydneyshe woke to a white world.

"It's very beautiful and peaceful," she said.
Dangerous roads
Police and inspectors from Roads and Maritime New SouthWales are inspecting the New England Highwayafter heavy snowfalls in the Northern Tablelands overnight.

They are concerned about a 100 kilometre stretch of highwaythat runs from Glen Innes to the bottom of Black Mountain.

Guyra, Ben Lomond and Glen Innes haveall been heavily affected.

The Transport Management Centre says while the highway isopen, motorists need to exercise extreme caution.

Local resident Doug issued a warning to fellow motorists inthe New England region.

"There's snow across the road everywhere," he said.

"Take extreme caution because the snow has actuallysettled across the road and will be very icy.

"I wouldn't advise anything there over about 60km anhour.

"It's normally 100km through there, but it is atreacherous part of the road."
