The growing trend of using coconut oil continues as it has promising benefits worth considering. People use to think that consuming coconut oil is unhealthy and could contribute to heart disease. However, studies have shown that consumption of coconut oil can help our body fight against bacteria and viruses (among one of its many benefits). So for those of you who have not tried using coconut oil, here are some of the benefits of coconut oil that you should look into.


1) It improves your complexion and skin issues
For those of you with skin issues such as eczema, dandruff, and dermatitis, you should try using coconut oil as it has many antioxidants that can heal and protect the skin. Fatty acids such as lauric and caprylic acid in coconut oil can help reduce inflammation externally and internally.


Coconut oil also works as an effective skin moisturizer as it has a detoxifying effect which removes the bacteria and toxins from your body while improving and brighten your complexion.


2) It raises the “good cholesterol”
Studies have indicated that the saturated fats in coconut oil increases HDL while reducing or converting LDL into good cholesterols that theoretically could reduce the risk of heart disease in long term. So, try using “virgin” or “extra virgin” coconut oil in your cooking as it is a valuable addition to your pantry.


3) Prevents tooth decay and gum disease
Honestly, I did not even know about this until I read about it in an article that coconut oil can prevent tooth decay and gum disease. How is works? Simple. There is a method used for centuries called oil pulling. Usually, we would use mouthwash to rinse our mouth but instead, replace it with coconut oil. If you are experiencing swollen or infected gums, you could try oil pulling at least 20 minutes a day for three times a week. By doing so, coconut oil can effectively remove oral bacteria and repair the gums.


4) Helps with weight loss
On the contrary to popular belief that eating coconut oil would contribute to weight gain, it is actually beneficial in weight loss as it helps to burn fats. The special fats in coconut oil called medium chain triglycerides (MCT) helps to break down fats in the liver which leads to burning of energy. So, coconut oil can be a healthy addition to your diet while replacing other less-healthy calories.


Personally, these are the few amazing effects of coconut oil that I have experienced. I’ve cooked using coconut oil and I also use it as a moisturizer. For cooking, it is advisable to buy the extra virgin coconut oil if you are looking into changing from unhealthy vegetable oil.
