第一篇:A piece of cake 小事一桩
I knew little about English when i first came to America.
So i went to a language school everyday to learn English.
One day, during the break i asked one of my classmates a question that I didn't understand.
When i thanked her for it,she said :"You are welcome. It's a piece of cake.."
I thought to myself:America is really a society for money in which everything is done for pay.
Thus i said to her:"I haven't taken any piece of cake with me today, what about a piece of biscuit?"
She looked at me with a puzzled expression, then smiled.
Knowing she hadn't hot her words across, she said:"What i mean is,"no problem", and that is only a trifling matter."
Then i came to learn that "a piece of cake" is not only a piece of cake but also means a thing that is very easy.
You are welcome.It's a piece of cake."

It happened when i just came to America. One day i went to dine in a fast-food restaurant and i saw there was a kind of BBQ Chicken Sandwich in the menu on the wall.I thought i had never tried that kind of sandwich when i was in my home country. Therefore i told the attendant that i wanted a BBQ Chicken Sandwich.Unexpectedly, she could not understand what i meant.
Then i repeated what i said, but she was still at a loss. Finally i pointed to the menu on the wall and said:"Isn't that BBQ Chicken Sandwih?"After she saw the menu, she laughed and told me that "BBQ" should be pronounced as "Bar-Be-Cue".On hearing that,i suddenly realized what it was.It turns out that "BBQ" is the abbreviation of barbecue, which means food, especially pieces of meat, roasted over an open fire.
BBQ~

I had a classmate who came from London. One day after class, we went to the school cafe together to enjoy our leisure time.We chatted about local conditions and customs of different countries at will.Suddenly he told me excitedly that his father was once a "Beefeater".
I was a bit confused, thinking to myself:Beefeater?Isn't he a person who eats beef? That is nothing worthy of showing off.But to maintain my minimum good manners,i asked him politely:"Is your father a Moslem?Does he eat pork or chicken besides beef?"Unexpectedly,as soon as i finished,my classmate looked at me with a very strange expression, showing he was quite baffled.
Through further communication,I realized the "beefeater" that he said was not a person who ate beef, but referred to "a guard at the Tower of London, famous for wearing the 16th century uniform".
Beefeater".

I am a nurse.I was lucky to work at an old people's home when i first came to America. As my English was poor,my aim at that time was to do more but speak less. One day i gave an old lady,Linda her medicine.Linda was over 90 years suffering from aged dementia.I tried several times, but Linda refused to open her mouth.Feeling anxious,,i said without thinking:"Linda, open your big mouth, please." Unexpectedly,Mrs.Linda got angry and shouted:"You have a big mouth.Leave me alone!"I was dumbstruck and did not know where my mistake laid.
Later on a few pointers from others made it clear to me that "big mouth" in American slang refers to a person who talks too much or spreads secrets around. No wonder Mrs.Linda got angry when she heard i said.Actually i should have said:"Open your mouth wide."
You have a bif mouth.Leave me alone!"(你才是big mouth呢。
Open your mouth wide."
BMW= big mouth woman |

第五篇:"Black" meat or dark meat?
This story happened when i just came to America. One day i went to the fired-chicken fast-food restaurant attached to the school for meal.A waiter asked me,"What kind of meat would you like?" At that time it occurred to me that i had learned in my college English class that "white meat" refers to chicken breast while "dark meat" means chicken leg. However, when i spoke,it went like,"Black meat, please."Suddenly i found the waiter looking angry (for he happened to be a black). Then i realized that i had said something worng. After i explained time and again that i just came to America and knew very little about slang,he became happy again.

第七篇:"Borrow" or "rent"?
I wanted to go for a trip with my whole family this weekend, but my car was broken down. Therefore i decided to rent a car from a car rental company.
"Can i borrow a car for this weekend?"I asked.
"I have a date,"the clerk said humorously.
I felt quite puzzled, wondering what was the matter. It turns out that "borrow" and "rent" in English are different,in that the former means free of charge while the latter means charges. When i used the word "borrow",it meant that i need not pay any money for the borrowed car. That's why the clerk said that he would use the car when he dated.Actually the correct way of expressing what i meant is "Can i rent a car this weekend?"
"Can i borrow a car for this weekend?"
Can i rent a car for this weekend?" |

On one weekend I was free,so i promised to accompany my good friend to watch a football match between teenagers and cheer for her son,who played the goal.
Standing or sitting by the field, the parents looked equally excited as their children.
The whistle was blown, and the young players entered the field one after another. All of a sudden a parent, not far from me,with a rough appearance shaped his hands like a tube and shouted towards the field,"Break a leg!"
The man was really unreasonable! How could he ask the children to fight against each other as to break a leg in order to parade their superiority and strive to outshine other?
I queitly told my friend about what i thought. She snorted with laughter and said,"You have misunderstood him.He has good intentions."
"Has he?"I still looked blank.
"It is said that it has something to do with performers making curtain-calls in a theater. The more brilliant the performance is,the more times the performers have to give their encores and answer the curtain-call to satisfy their audience.Probably until they are too tired to stand up the audience will continue. Therefore, everytine before the performance, people like to say,'Break a leg',to wish the performers success. It is very close to 'Good luck!" in meaning, which we often say.
After saying that,my good friend made a curtain-call in the pose of "breaking a leg" to me with her left leg pulled backward and right leg slightly bent.
Oh!I had really wronged the kind-hearted man.
Break a leg!"

One day it was time for lunch, and i was eating my sandwich that i prepared myself.Vera, the secretary of our company, asked me absent-mindedly,"Brown bagging today?"For a while,i was at a loss to find a word to respond to what she had said.Ithought to myself,"You should have seen the black bag that i take with me to work every day.
Seeing i was wearing a puzzled expression,Vera promptly explained that "brown bagging" had the meaning of providing lunch for oneself or taking one's lunch to eat in the presence of one's company.Usually the food is kept in a brown paper bag,so it has this name. The persons who take their lunch with them are called brown baggers.
Brown baggers. |
