ROME — Kuwait has agreed to purchase 28 Typhoon combat jets in a multibillion euro deal with the Italian government, industry sources in the region said Friday.

The deal is still in negotiation but Kuwait has agreed to buy 22 single seat and six twin-seat Typhoons in a government-to-government agreement.

Italian firm Finmeccanica's Alenia Aermacchi division has been leading the Eurofighter effort to sell the Typhoon to the Kuwaitis.

Industry sources said the deal could see the Kuwaitis be the first export customer for the active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar being developed for the jet by Italy's Selex ES.

One industry executive said the agreement is welcome, not least because after a flurry of Middle Eastern successes this year for French rival Dassault with the Rafale, the Kuwaiti decision "reinvigorates other opportunities in the gulf region for Typhoon."

France secured deals for the Rafale in Qatar and Egypt earlier this year and deliveries to Cairo are underway.

Saudi Arabia and Oman are already Typhoon customers in the region. The Saudis have been talking about a further buy of the jets and Bahrain is also another potential customer.

News that the two governments have been in detailed discussions over the sale has been circulating since midyear. The deal follows reports in May that the Kuwaitis were in discussions with the US to purchase up to 40 Boeing F/A-18 fighters.

The position on those negotiations is unknown, although there has been some speculation in the past that the Kuwaitis could go for a split buy.

A US source acknowledged there is always a chance for a split buy from Kuwait, and said talks on a Super Hornet sale to Kuwait are still moving forward.

While declining to name Kuwait specifically, a Boeing spokeswoman said the company and the US government are still in conversation with potential Middle Eastern customers

　　台风战斗机由欧洲英意等四国联合开发研制，是欧洲最大的国防合作计划。欧洲战斗机集团总裁古铁雷斯说，这项新交易说明台风战斗机性能的优越性，今后将有机会争取更多新订单。
　　全球至今有八个国家德国、英国、意大利、西班牙、奥地利、沙特、阿曼和科威特购买台风战斗机。这款战斗机造价约1.4亿美元，在2003年投入使用。加上科威特新订购的28架，战斗机目前总共卖出了599架。
　　随着极端组织“伊斯兰国”崛起，中东各国纷纷加强国土防卫，科威特也不例外。科威特购买新战斗机就是为了提升军备加强战斗力，以应对极端武装分子带来的安全威胁。

Kuwait to purchase 28 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from Italy

Kuwait has signed an agreement with Italy to purchase 28 Eurofighter Typhoon swing-role combat aircraft, strengthening the country's military capabilities.

Under this new deal, Kuwait is expected to receive 22 single-side jets and six dual-seat aircraft.

Eurofighter CEO Alberto Gutierrez said: "This new agreement is the confirmation of the superiority of the Eurofighter over its competitors and will provide a great opportunity for further Eurofighter orders.

"We are delighted to welcome Kuwait as the newest member of our Eurofighter Typhoon family. The Eurofighter is already proven and trusted by six nations to perform in all operational environments."

Eurofighter Typhoon is a foreplane / delta wing aircraft featuring modern avionics and sensors, defensive aids sub system (DASS) and distinct weapons, such as Mauser BK-27 27mm cannon, air-to-air, air-to-surface and anti-ship missiles and precision-guided munitions.

Built by a consortium of Finmeccanica, Airbus Group and BAE Systems, the aircraft's development is Europe's largest multinational military collaborative effort managed by the Nato Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA).

The founding countries of Eurofighter include Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.

Entered into service in 2003, a total of 444 aircraft have been delivered to six nations such Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain, Austria and Saudi Arabia. In the Middle East, Oman also ordered 12 aircraft in December 2012.

For the last two years, Kuwait has been evaluating options to replace its fleet of 39 older-model Boeing F/A-18 Hornet jets.

Among other options, Kuwait had reportedly considered acquiring Super Hornet advanced fighter jets from Boeing.

With this new development, the Eurofighter Typhoon will have a total order for 599 aircraft.

據聞中東國家都慷慨大方，連7億美元都可以捐獻～所以希望這次在獲得颱風戰機後，科威特也能將手頭上的F/A-18C/D機群盡數捐贈給我國。據悉科威特在1990年代初期共引進了32架單座型的F/A-18C以及8架雙座型的F/A-18D，目前據信還有27架F/A-18C和7架F/A-18D在服役中。在獲得這批戰機後，馬來西亞只需要花點錢升級至我國目前8架F/A-18D的規格，那就擁有總數27架F/A-18C和15架F/A-18D了～足夠編成兩個戰機中隊，每中隊各裝備12架F/A-18C和6架F/A-18D！剩餘的可作為後備機或拆作零備件。

我军没有budget, 中东如果捐些F18来也不错

如果科威特捐F18过来的话也不错，反正美国需要马来西亚帮他抵抗中国（会不会抵抗还是个问题），基本上不会太限制空军upgrade F18。也正好解决战机数量不足又没钱买新战机的问题。

不过还是希望台风的降临，台风的新一代导弹看起来都很不错。

美國媒體報導，科威特已經與義大利簽約採購28架颱風(Typhoon)戰機，合約總價值90億美金。分析師認為，科威特放棄購買美國戰機，改為採購歐系戰機，等於是向美國表達不滿。　
根據「國防新聞」(Defense News)網站報導，科威特4日與義大利芬梅卡尼卡(Finmeccanica)簽約採購28架颱風戰機，包括22架單座型與6架雙座型戰機，這項政府間軍事採購合約總額約79億歐元(約90億美元)。科威特採購的戰機也將換裝有源相控陣(AESA)雷達。
颱風戰機又稱為「歐洲戰機」(Eurofighter)，為義大利、德國、西班牙與英國合作研發的多功能戰機。在中東地區，沙烏地阿拉伯也是颱風戰機使用國。
隨著武裝團體伊斯蘭國(Islamic State)在中東地區叛亂，許多中東與北非國家開始添購戰機來強化國家安全。埃及與卡達都採購法國達騷公司(Dassault)生產的飆風(Rafale)戰機。
長期以來，科威特空軍一直是美製戰機的主要客戶，現役主力戰機為27架波音公司生產的F/A-18大黃蜂戰機。美國政府與波音公司同時也向科威特推銷40架F/A-18E/F超級大黃蜂戰機。不過，外界認為科威特政府將不會購買F/A-18E/F戰機。
分析師認為，科威特這次選擇購買歐系戰機等於是向美國傳達信息，對於美國在阿拉伯之春革命後的作為，特別是與伊朗改善關係表達不滿。不過，報導也懷疑在採購颱風戰機後，科威特是否有足夠的飛行員操作戰機。
