Little India Riot: India's Sun TV asked to correct "erroneous" report
Singapore's High Commissioner to India Lim Thuan Kuan has written to India's Sun TV Network to ask for immediate corrections to its "erroneous" coverage of Sunday's riot in Little India.

I refer to your news bulletin on 9 December 7pm.
Sun TV's coverage of the 8 December riot in Little India in Singapore was erroneous. In particular, the following points were entirely false:
- That the Indian national was pushed out of the bus by the driver.
- That Singaporeans and Chinese attacked the Indian national Tamils.
- That Indian national Tamils were hiding in their homes for fear of being harassed by the police or attacked by the local Chinese .
The above-stated incidents did not take place . The facts are as follows:
- The deceased had boarded the bus when it was already full. The deceased also appeared to be drunk and he was causing trouble on the bus, even dropping his trousers whilst on the bus .
- When the first ambulance and police car arrived soon after being activated, an agitated mob of about 100 had formed around the scene of the accident, and this escalated into the riot involving about 400 persons .
- The situation was eventually contained by the police. To date, 24 Indian Nationals have been arrested and charged for rioting.
- Our Singapore Police Force is currently investigating the incident.
- The driver of the bus has also been arrested, with the incident classified as causing death by negligent act. He is currently assisting Police with investigations into the accident .

- After the deceased was assisted off the bus, he proceeded to walk/run alongside the bus in an unsteady manner while holding onto his pants. He stumbled and fell onto the path of the back wheel of the bus and was run over.
The riot was an isolated incident arising from the unlawful actions of an unruly mob reacting to a fatal traffic accident . The vast majority of foreign workers in Singapore are peaceful, hardworking and law-abiding workers. The Indian High Commissioner in Singapore has been fully briefed at all times since Sunday and has been working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide consular assistance to the family of the deceased as well as those arrested for rioting .
We would like to put on record that the erroneous reporting of the incident by Sun TV has been irresponsible and brings to question its journalistic integrity. The inaccurate and sensationalist coverage clearly shows that Sun TV did not even bother to check the facts before reporting on the incident .
We are requesting an immediate correction (both online and on broadcast) and for Sun TV to provide the full facts of the case so that your viewers have an accurate understanding of what really happened.
