澳洲笑鴗鳥銀幣是由澳洲Perth Mint鑄幣廠所鑄造，笑鴗鳥是澳洲的傳奇性鳥類，亦譯為「笑翠鳥」，等同澳洲灌木林的同義詞，也是最大的魚狗鳥(kingfisher)。身高約45公分，喙大而有力，上身棕色、腹部灰白交間。由於叫聲洪亮、爽朗，聽起來像小孩的笑聲，廣受大眾喜愛。雪梨2000年奧運會亦以笑鴗鳥為3種吉祥物之一，取名奧利(Olly)，其所代表的特質為：群體、誠實、熱誠、忠誠及心胸開朗，充分代表了奧林匹克運動會多年來，延續不斷的精神。
澳洲笑鴗鳥銀幣由澳洲柏斯鑄幣局(Perth Mint)承鑄，自1990年起推出，在無尾熊銀幣推出前，是澳洲唯一每年更新設計的主要純銀(含銀成色千分之999)法償貨幣。
笑鴗鳥銀幣自1994年起，其設計圖與普通規格之1英兩銀幣同時更換版面。普通規格之1英兩笑鴗鳥銀幣，除每年更新版面外，亦每年「限量發行30萬枚」，數量遠較其他同類銀幣為少，同時，每枚笑鴗鳥銀幣均附有高級壓克力保護套，不但方便雅鑑珍藏，更可減少該貴金屬幣意外磨損，對銀幣而言，更可減少其氧化變色的機會，故該銀幣是以量少質佳取勝。
