Bukit Larut To Have Cable Car Facilities
IPOH, May 26 (Bernama) -- The Perak state government today signed a concession agreement with Taiping Cable Car Sdn Bhd to build and operate Cable Car services in Bukit Larut, despite the proposed receiving mixed reactions.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said once the cable car project was ready, the 3.5km ride to the peak would take only 12 minutes and boost the tourism industry and tourists to Taiping.
"The state government is aware of the need to preserve the environment. So, the government had a series of discussions with the relevant authorities to iron out issues involving the environment," he told reporters after witnessing the signing of the agreement between the concessionaire and the state government here Wednesday.
He added that the decision to go ahead with the RM65 million project was only made after the concessionaire had given an undertaking to preserve the environment and avoid any soil erosion when carrying out the construction, especially when building the main structure (poles for cable car), using helicopters, instead of clearing the jungle.
Meanwhile, the company's executive chairman Datuk Seri Talaat Husain said the company would take every step to ensure the preservation of natural environment in Bukit Larut and its surroundings.
"Though this project does not require a valuation report from the Department of Environment (DOE), we had prepared a Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and have also set up a committee comprising environmental experts to monitor works carried out," he said.
He added that experts who were involved in the cable car project in Langkawi would also be involved in the project that would use technology from Austria and Switzerland while the project is expected to be completed in 10 months.
