Standard & Poor's Ratings Services said today its 'BBB+' corporate credit rating on Malaysian palm oil producer IOI Corp. Bhd. remains on CreditWatch with negative implications, after the company's recent announcement that its wholly owned subsidiary IOI Properties (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. has successfully tendered for a land parcel on Singapore's Sentosa island for about Singapore dollars (S$) 1.09 billion (US$760 million).
As a 65% partner in the joint venture with Singapore's Ho Bee Investment Ltd. to buy the 99-year leasehold land, IOI Properties would fund its contribution of S$700 million potentially through a mix of debt, equity, and internally generated funds.
The 'BBB+' foreign currency rating on the senior unsecured borrowings by IOI Capital (L) Bhd. and IOI Ventures (L) Bhd.--with IOI Corp. as guarantor--also remains on CreditWatch with negative implications. The ratings on IOI Corp. were placed on CreditWatch with negative implications on Nov. 19, 2007, after the company said it would issue up to US$600 million in bonds for funding its expansion, working capital, and potential acquisition plans. The company concluded this bond issue on Jan. 9, 2008.
"The Sentosa Cove announcement, which follows a series of similar growth-focused and shareholder-oriented measures by the company, intensifies the pressure on its credit profile and increases the likelihood of IOI Corp.'s financial metrics falling short of its current ratings," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Joey Chew.
In resolving the CreditWatch over the next four to six weeks, Standard & Poor's would seek additional details on the overall medium-term growth and expansion plans of the company, its capital commitments to various businesses and the respective means of financing. "The details available currently indicate at least a one-notch downgrade in the ratings," Ms. Chew noted.
