QPR break club record to sign Congolese defender

There is a very important fan base here - I’ve played at Loftus Road before and it’s fantastic. "                                                                    Christopher Samba

QPR ARE delighted to confirm the signing of experienced centre-half Christopher Samba.

The 28 year-old Congolese defender has penned a four-and-a-half year deal in W12, after Rangers agreed an undisclosed club record fee with Anzhi Makhachkala for the player’s signature.

The deal is subject to the player receiving international clearance.

Harry Redknapp has moved quickly to fill the void left by the departing Ryan Nelsen by adding Samba – the former Blackburn Rovers defender, who has 26 international caps to his name – to his ever-improving squad.

Redknapp told www.qpr.co.uk: “This is an unbelievable signing.

“Tony Fernandes deserves a lot of credit for this one – he has worked so hard on bringing him in.

“I was speaking with him a month ago and he asked me who I would want to sign if Ryan Nelsen left, he asked me to give him a couple of names.

“I said to him, ‘Well, these aren’t possible to get but if you’re asking me who I’d have, I’ll give you a couple of players.’ One of them was Chris Samba.

“The next thing I know he’s telling me that he’s working on bringing him in! It’s amazing.

“Chris is just what we need. He’s a monster. Great in the air, quick, a leader, strong, fantastic in both boxes, hard as nails. He’s a proper centre-half.”

Samba – who has made 23 appearances for Russian top flight side Anzhi this season, scoring three goals – expressed his delight at putting pen to paper, commenting: “I’m delighted to be back in the Premier League. It’s the best league in the world to play football.

“I’ve been linked with the club for a long time. With Harry here though, he is really passionate and he wants to do something with the club.

“Unfortunately things haven’t gone the way the club would have wanted so far this season but there’s still a lot of time and I’m sure we can get out of it.”

He added: “I know what is going on with the project here. There is a very important fan base here - I’ve played at Loftus Road before and it’s fantastic.

“The club is ambitious and I’m sure it’s a good challenge for me.

“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe we could get out of trouble.”

Samba will wear the number 5 shirt at Loftus Road.

Spurs ace pens Loftus Road loan deal

I live for pressure games. I’m looking forward to the challenge."                                                                    Andros Townsend

ENGLAND Under-21 international midfielder Andros Townsend has joined QPR on loan.

The 21-year-old Tottenham Hotspur man has put pen to paper on a deal until the end of the season at Loftus Road.

The move will see Townsend, who has made 10 appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season, reunited once again with Harry Redknapp, who managed the Chingford-born player during his time at White Hart Lane.

Redknapp believes the addition of the versatile midfielder will be of great benefit to the R’s over the course of the remainder of the campaign, saying: “Andros is a kid with a fantastic future.

“I like Andros an awful lot. He’s a winger, he’s strong, he’s quick, he’s brave and he scores goals.

“He’s unlucky that he’s got [Gareth] Bale and [Aaron] Lennon keeping him out of the team.

“I think eventually he'll become a big player.”

Townsend told www.qpr.co.uk: “I worked with Harry at Spurs – he gave me my debut – so it was a no-brainer when QPR came in for me.

“Harry has brought me in to do a job for him. I’m confident in my own ability and I want to repay him.

“I live for pressure games. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

He added: “I’ve learnt a lot through my loan spells in the past and now I’m at a massive club like QPR and I’m confident I’ll do well.

“I'm relieved the deal is over the line. It’s all happened quite quickly, so I’m just excited about the weeks and months ahead.”

Midfielder signs 18-month deal at Loftus Road

This is my third deadline-day move. It’s always frantic, but thankfully we’ve managed to get it done."                                                                    Jermaine Jenas

JERMAINE JENAS has joined QPR from Tottenham Hotspur, signing an 18-month contract at Loftus Road.

The 29-year-old, who has won 21 England caps, returned from a loan spell with Nottingham Forest at the start of this month and is now looking forward to working with Harry Redknapp once again.

Jenas, who featured regularly at Spurs under the now-R’s boss, told www.qpr.co.uk: “I’m happy to be here.

“This is my third deadline-day move. It’s always frantic, but thankfully we’ve managed to get it done.”

Jenas revealed Redknapp being in charge at Loftus Road was a huge factor in his decision to join QPR, adding: “It’s great to be linking up with Harry again. Him being here was key to me making the move.

“I know what he brings as a manager and on a personal level, it’s an opportunity for me to play football.

“It’s no secret I’ve had some injury problems in the last couple of years, but this is a great opportunity for me to play in the Premier League – and hopefully keep this club where they belong.”

Redknapp added: “I know JJ very well, I had him at Tottenham.

“I think he's a good player. He can get from box to box, he’s quick, strong and athletic.

“He’s a good lad with a great attitude. I’m sure he’ll be a big asset for us.”
