16-01-2008: Nazir: CIMB hopes to emulate Phileo
By Surin Murugiah & Yong Yen Nie
KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Bank Bhd wants to emulate former banking group PhileoAllied Bank in being an innovator, and creating value for its customers and stakeholders, said its group chief executive Datuk Nazir Razak.
“The innovative spirit of PhileoAllied is somewhat in CIMB,” he said at the opening of the CIMB Bank and CIMB Islamic Bank branch at Solaris Mont’ Kiara, a premier commercial development here, yesterday.
He said PhileoAllied challenged convention in pioneering ground breaking and innovative products and services, which focused on making banking better and easier for customers.
He identified electronic and online banking, online and branch broking, café banking, remote account opening at electronic kiosks, and the one Statement facility among the innovative products that PhileoAllied had introduced.
Tong cutting the ribbon during the official opening of CIMB Bank at Solaris Mont'Kiara, watched by Nazir (right) and CIMB Islamic Bank Bhd chairman Datuk Dr Syed Muhamad Syed Abdul Kadir yesterday.
Speaking at the launch yesterday, Nazir credited PhileoAllied founder Tong Kooi Ong with challenging the local consumer banking industry that was then plagued by complacency and mediocrity.
“Tong was a banker ahead of his time,” he said.
Tong, who is Sunrise Bhd executive chairman and also a member of CIMB’s international advisory panel, officiated at the opening of the Solaris Mont’ Kiara CIMB Bank branch. Sunrise completed building Solaris Mont’ Kiara in 2007.
Nazir said: “Of course, today we have taken all these products for granted, but PhileoAllied created a real buzz about banking then, and certainly shook the establishment.”
He said that while it was one of its competitors that acquired PhileoAllied Bank, it was CIMB that inherited the PhileoAllied spirit, adding that CIMB’s consumer banking franchise had many parallels with the PhileoAllied story. In 2001, Malayan Banking Bhd completed the acquisition of PhileoAllied Bank Bhd.
“As a group, we pursue excellence, eschew mediocrity, challenge convention and embrace change and transformation, all towards creating value for customers and stakeholders.
“We too had to enter the race from a position of relative weakness, as following the CIMB-Bumiputra Commerce Bank merger in June 2005, we were very far behind our competitors,” he said.
Officiating at the opening of the bank’s branch, Tong said: “The residents of Mont’ Kiara will be served by a very progressive, innovative and customer-oriented bank that CIMB has become.
“This support from the residents, in turn, will go a small way in fulfilling CIMB’s vision to become the most valued Universal Banking franchise in Southeast Asia.”
Expressing his delight and gratitude to CIMB Bank for having a branch at Solaris Mont’ Kiara, he said the success of CIMB over the last three years was nothing short of remarkable, as it had transformed from a merchant bank into the country’s second largest financial institution, picking up an unprecedented number of awards and accolades along the way.
Tong said although the PhileoAllied Bank ceased to exist seven years ago following the mandatory industry consolidation exercise, the “Phileo Spirit” was still very much alive.
“In its very short history, I am glad that it had a profound impact on the industry and in people’s lives. Today, I also see the same spirit burning in the CIMB group. I can see the passion, the vision and the leadership,” he said.
Earlier in his speech, Nazir said PhileoAllied’s former customers would continue to remember their experience with the bank, and that its premature demise has left a gap in the industry.
“In fact, from a personal standpoint, I also stand among these people. My own experience with consumer banking began with PhileoAllied, as I, too, used to be a happy customer of the bank,” he said.
Speaking to The Edge Financial Daily after the launch, Tong said CIMB was the closest in the industry in carrying the same spirit as PhileoAllied today.
Recalling his time at PhileoAllied, Tong said he did not think it was necessary for foreign banks to take the lead in consumer banking in the country.
“I had the passion for the industry, and more importantly there was the opportunity to do something different and change the industry.
“We were the underdogs and we liked to do new things. It was fun; I did not know whether there would be an outcome but I enjoyed the journey,” he said.
Asked if he had any regrets that he had to exit the industry due to the consolidation, Tong said: “The reality is that nobody likes to lose something which they built.
“Somebody told me that the reason people remember us (PhileoAllied) is that we expired early. The good must die young.”
Quoting Helen Keller, however, he said: ‘When one door of happiness closes, another opens,’ alluding to his other successful ventures.
Nazir said when CIMB private banking was at its planning stages, the sounding board for CIMB’s business model was PhileoAllied.
“What attracted me was how it looked at the perspective of its customers,” he said.
The Solaris Mont’ Kiara CIMB branch marks the first new of the eight to be opened by CIMB in 2008. Occupying 8,100 square feet, the full-service branch will be open from Mondays to Fridays from 9.15am to 4.45pm, and offers a variety of transactions including opening accounts, investing in structured and wealth management products and applying for loans.
Priority customers can also enjoy the additional facilities provided by CIMB Club, CIMB Bank’s preferred banking service platform.
Nazir said: “Today’s new branch here at Solaris is yet another step forward for CIMB Bank. We believe that this is an excellent location from which to serve the banking needs of an estimated 40,000 residents who live in the extended Mont’ Kiara enclave and the mass affluent triangle of Bukit Damansara, Sri Hartamas and Bukit Tunku.”
