By GLADYS TAY
JOHOR BARU: When Beh Chun Loo’s younger brother injured his arm five years ago, he felt scared and totally helpless.
His brother, who was then six years old, was playing when a window pane fell and cut his arm.
Beh, who was in a state of shock, was only able to call his father who then arranged for an ambulance.
This incident prompted him to find out more about first aid and led him to join the St John Ambulance when he was in Form One.

“I am glad that I have learnt various first aid skills such as the correct way to perform CPR, using inhalers to help people with breathing difficulties and making correct and accurate decisions during emergencies,” said the 17-year-old student from SMK Taman Pelangi.
This determination helped the outstanding St John Ambulance team leader led his team to emerge as the overall champion in the Ambulance Adult category of the First Aid Competition 2007 held at SMK Sultan Ismail here recently.
A total of 12 different teams from schools in four districts in the state took part in four different categories.
Other than Beh’s team, another group from SMK Taman Pelangi also emerged winners under the Nursing Adult team, which in-volves assisting patients indoors.
”I am very excited that all the teams from the Johor Baru district emerged champions and all of us will be on our way to represent the state in the national-level competition scheduled in September,” an elated Beh said.
St John Ambulance state commander Datuk Jimmy Low Boon Hong congratulated the Johor Baru teams on their first aid skills which stood out from the other teams.
“Although team spirit is vital, good communication skill is equally important,” he said.
