13-03-2008: KLCI falls alongside all regional bourses

PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index closed lower at midday, tracking losses at the regional markets after the overnight losses at Wall Street yesterday.
Asian markets fell between 2% and 3.2% this morning after the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.38% or 46.57 points to 12,110.24 points yesterday as crude oil prices surged past the US$110 per barrel mark.
The Dow Jones on Tuesday had rallied 417 points after the Federal Reserve said it would inject US$200 billion to ease credit markets.
At the regional indices Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 3.21% to 12,447.8 points, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index lost 3.11% to 22,707, while Korea's Kospi declined 2.45% to 1,618.24 points.
Meanwhile, Singapore's Straits Times Index fell 2.48% to 2,845.61 and the Shanghai A Shares Index lost 2% to 4,184.77 points.
At the Bursa Malaysia, the KLCI fell 26.02 points to 1,206.57 points, erasing its gains yesterday. Losers led gainers by 556 to 73. Some 313.7 million shares valued at RM870.72 million were traded.
Losses at the KLCI were also compounded by the selldown at several key blue chip and plantation stocks.
Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Asiatic Development Bhd and Bursa Malaysia were among the top losers this morning, falling 35 sen each.
BCHB fell to RM9.30, Tenaga to RM6.85, Asiatic to RM7.95 and Bursa dropped to RM8.95 at midday. Tenaga was also one of the most actively traded stocks this morning with 13 million shares done.
Tenaga fell after HwangDBS Vickers cut its profit estimates for the utility company on higher coal prices.
Meanwhile, United Plantations Bhd and Tanjong Plc fell 30 sen each to RM13.40 and RM15.40 respectively, and Sime Darby Bhd and Genting Bhd also lost 30 sen each to RM9.70 and RM6.40 respectively.
UEM World Bhd, which fell 26 sen to RM2.80, was the most actively traded stock this morning with 23.5 million shares done. Other actively traded counters were Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd, UEM Builder Bhd and Gamuda Bhd.
The top gainer this morning was British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd that added 25 sen to RM42, while Suiwah Corporation Bhd gained 16 sen to RM1.22.
