Android 4.2 Jelly Bean brings all-new photography powers
29th Oct 2012 | 16:32
Coming to Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 soon
Google has updated it's Android platform to the all new… Jelly Bean, but with a host of new features.
The headline offering is the new Photo Sphere functionality, which lets you take 360-degree photos of your surroundings in a manner similar to StreetView.
Google's Rob Hamilton told TechRadar that this was 'unlike any other panorama function' available on a smartphone, by giving users the ability to drop into a photo; however, it does bear a lot of similarities to Microsoft's PhotoSynth offering.
Feature fest
There are a number of new other features on offer, including multiple user accounts for tablet users (so you can keep your apps and emails secret from the rest of the family) and widgets coming to the lockscreen so you can quickly check out email and upcoming appointments.
Another new (ish) feature is the addition of more Google Now cards, giving you enhanced local functionality, including photos of nearby sights and scanning your Gmail for hotel reservations and giving you directions when you land in the new country.
Packages can also be tracked using the Now service, complementing the options to see currency conversion and home time zones in the online feature.
Snap happy
The camera has been given something of a more stark overhaul in addition to the new Photo Sphere option, with the controls removed and now accessible using a long press to get to the likes of the integrated HDR mode.
And the final big talking point, and one that was wholly expected, is the new gesture-based Swype-like feature that allows users to type out a missive using one dragging motion on the keyboard.
The Android 4.2 release date coincides with the launch of the Google Nexus 4 and Nexus 10, both of which will come equipped with the platform from 13 November, and will be coming to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Google Nexus 7 by 'mid November' Google tells us – although we'd have considered the 13th to be middle of the month really.
We're currently canvassing the other manufacturers to see whether they'll be updating their handsets with the new platform, and for those that haven't even managed to update to Jelly Bean 4.1 if they'll be skipping to 4.2 instead. |
