AirAsia在到处找钱了。。。
AirAsia seeks Europe financing for plane purchases
Published: 2008/09/30
The budget airline will meet the European Credit Agencies next month in Paris to secure loans for 45 aircraft due for deliveries from next year
AIRASIA Bhd, Southeast Asia’s biggest discount airline, is seeking loans from the European Credit Agencies for its plane purchases, as the carrier aims to secure funds amid a tightening global credit market.
The airline, with a total of 175 single-aisle aircraft on order with Airbus SAS, will meet the European Credit Agencies, known as ECAs, next month in Paris to try and secure financing for 45 aircraft scheduled for deliveries starting from next year, deputy chief executive officer Kamarudin Meranun said in a telephone interview today.
“We have started the ball rolling,” Kamarudin said. “I’m fairly optimistic that we get them.”
The carrier aims to secure financing as credit may tighten following the US House of Representatives’ rejection yesterday of a US$700 billion rescue plan for banks. Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, the world’s fourth-largest aircraft maker, has had some deliveries postponed by customers including Jet Blue Airways Corp and Virgin Blue Holdings Ltd.
AirAsia declined 0.8 per cent to RM1.25 in Kuala Lumpur.
Network Expansion
The Sepang, Malaysia-based discount carrier, whose shares have fallen 22 per cent this year, needs funds for new planes and network expansion plans.
AirAsia has raised almost RM1 billion (US$289 million) this year to fund the purchase of 23 aircraft, Kamarudin said. The airline is scheduled to receive 14 planes next year and another 24 the following year, he said.
“The financing from ECAs may come in tranches,” he added. “At the same time we have a few slots for standalone” financing, where loans are based on commercial terms. AirAsia prefers to have a smaller portion of these loans because the “spread has gone up quite substantially this year, probably about 50 to 60 basis points,” or 0.5 to 0.6 percentage points, he said.
European Credit Agencies are public agencies that provide government-backed loans, guarantees, credits and insurance to private corporations from their home country to do business abroad, particularly in developing markets.
Rising fuel costs and a currency loss contributed to a 95 per cent tumble in second-quarter profit at AirAsia. The airline may post a loss this year and in 2009, UBS AG said in a report this month. - Bloomberg

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia will soon be taken private, a business weekly reported on Saturday, citing unnamed sources.
AirAsia's controlling shareholder is Tune Air Sdn Bhd, which held 30.7 per cent of the company's shares as at end-March this year, the Edge said.
Tune Air's shareholders are AirAsia Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes and AirAsia Executive Director Kamarudin Meranun, the report added.
'(AirAsia) has generated a lot of interest but there has always been scepticism about its business model from investors looking at short term returns,' the weekly quoted an unnamed source as saying.
'This has frustrated the major shareholders.' Officials at AirAsia, which has a market capitalisation of around US$850 million, could not be reached for comment.
Airlines around the world are set to post losses of US$5.2 billion this year as high oil prices and weakening demand take a toll, the International Air Transport Association (Iata) estimates.
Since the start of the year, AirAsia shares have lost 23 per cent, outperforming the benchmark Kuala Lumpur Composite Index which has fallen 30 per cent. -- REUTERS
