據英國《獨立報》（The Independent）報導，在美國幾乎每個都會地區，一般勞工的薪水根本就難以負擔房租。在任何州賺取最低工資的全職工人都無法負擔以市價租用2房的住處費用。數據顯示，時薪勞工每周需工作104個小時，而每小時至少需要賺取15美元（約新台幣495元），才能負擔起普通的「一房一廳」房租。
