Khaled warns varsities and colleges as orientation week approaches

PETALING JAYA: Authorities in universities and colleges must be held accountable for ragging in their premises, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin said.

As orientation week approaches, he said seniors might conduct orientation on freshies but the authorities must be vigilant to ensure no untoward incidents.

“Based on what happened recently at the Royal Military College, we will not tolerate any kind of ragging and we hope it won’t happen during orientation week. It must not.

“University authorities must be accountable and ensure that this will not happen,” Khaled said in an interview here yesterday.

He said the purpose of such orientation was merely to familiarise freshmen with their new environment and not subject them to ragging.

“Everyone needs to be mindful about this,” he said.

The warning comes several days before orientation week starts on July 4 in all public universities in the country for “freshies”.

Over 40,000 students are expected to start their undergraduate course in 20 public universities this year, which is 0.38% more compared with last year’s admissions.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of students are also expected to enrol in various private colleges.

Last week, Royal Military College student Mohammad Naim Musta qim, 16, died after allegedly being physically abused by his seniors.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek had also asked academic institutions in the country to ban ragging completely and take immediate action against the senior students involved.

Having name of a once-famous actor a bane for freshie
By K. SUTHAKAR
[email protected]

HAVING the name of a once famous Tamil film actor can land you in trouble during university orientation. I found that out the hard way as a freshie in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) many years ago.

My bitter experience began the moment the official orientation ended and my senior Indian mates came in to kick off the month-long “unofficial orientation.”

My ragging “baptism” came when a group of seniors confronted me and two other freshies as we were going up a flight of stairs to my hostel.

After telling them my name and room number, one of them remarked: “So you think you are a famous actor? Watch out. We are coming to get you tonight. Don’t go into hiding. We will make your life miserable if you don’t cooperate,” one of them warned.

They asked us to say 10 vulgar words in Tamil and we were scolded when we could say only one or two.

As a naive 20-year-old then, I panicked and related my predicament to a Chinese freshie friend who allowed me to spend the night in his room. I was so scared that I even gave him my diary for safekeeping for fear the seniors would read it.

The ragging would always start after nightfall when seniors would barge into our rooms in groups and bombard us with embarrassing questions, usually on our sexual experiences or the lack of it.

On several occasions, we were pushed inside a cupboard and told to imagine that we had gone to Haadyai to have sex with prostitutes.

After being allowed out after about 30 minutes, we were told to relate our “sexual experience” in detail. The most “creative” person is adjudged the “sex king.”

We were even told on many occasions to lie on the floor fully clothed and make “love” to an ant.

I still remember when I was told to take off my shirt to rub the bare sweaty body of a swarthy guy who pretended to be a drug addict.

Another incident was when I and another freshie were told to lie on each other and pretend to have oral sex with our clothes on.

I even washed the room of a senior who threatened me with dire consequences if I failed to do so.

In my second year, a student was expelled after a group of 18 seniors were caught by hostel wardens asking three freshies to show their private parts. The sacking made newspaper headlines.

Many of those who had “ragged” me turned out to be good friends later. Their names are etched in my memory.

Varsity seniors caught bullying freshies risk harsh punishment

PETALING JAYA: Seniors caught ragging freshmen will be punished accordingly, including being expelled, warned the vice-chancellors of several public universities.

The VCs and deputy VCs interviewed by The Star reiterated that ragging was unlawful and would not be tolerated.

They advised freshmen who were ragged to complaint immediately to campus authorities such as the college masters, fellows or even the security offices.

Universiti Putra Malaysia vice-chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dr Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah said that while ragging was almost non-existent nowadays, stern action would be taken against those who attempt to create trouble.

“We will definitely take action if it happens. If the offence is serious, there is a possibility the action may warrant expulsion,” he said when contacted. He added that the issue of ragging was nothing new.

“The seniors should know they are not allowed to indulge in ragging as it is against the law.

“Orientation week is conducted every year to welcome new students. The universities set guidelines and students have to respect that,” said Dr Nik Mustapha.

He was commenting on a statement by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin that university and college authorities must be accountable to ensure that the orientation conducted did not cross the line.

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar warned that students could face expulsion if they were caught ragging another person on campus.

Universiti Utara Malaysia vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said there was no harm in senior students getting to know their juniors but they should know when to draw the line between harmless jokes and abuse.

“A little bit of harmless jokes are fine, but anything involving physical, mental or verbal abuse and humiliation will not be tolerated,” he said.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Razak said over 500 selected student facilitators were trained for orientation week and to watch out for any untoward happenings.

Higher Education Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Zulkefli A. Hassan said the ministry’s stance on ragging was very clear.

“There is no two ways about it. The relevant authorities in universities will be made accountable.
