護經唸誦的意義

— 達摩難陀長老/魏善韜譯 —



護經 (Paritta) 的唸誦,是為了祝福及保護虔誠佛教徒,而朗誦吟詠一些佛陀以巴利語
親說的經文。

護經或佛經唸誦,是一項遍及全世界的佛教行持,特別是在以巴利語進行唸誦的上座
部佛教國家。這些經文大部份是由佛弟子從佛陀的基本教義中所挑選出來的。約在兩
千年以前,這些佛經記錄在歐拉 (Ola) 葉片上;後來,它們被編成一本《護經唸誦本》
的書籍。這些被挑選作為護經唸誦的佛經所屬的原始佛典名稱是經藏的《增支部》、
《中部》、《長部》 、《相應部》和《小部》。

佛教徒唸誦某些佛經作為保護之用叫做護經唸誦。這裡,「保護」意指防護吾人免於
各種形式的惡靈、不幸、疾病和星宿運轉的影響,並堅強我們對佛法的信心。唸誦的
特定聲波在鄰近區域創造出一種非常悅人的氣氛。唸誦的韻律也是重要的。人們也許
會注意到,當佛教僧侶唸誦這些佛經時,他們會用不同的語調來和諧適應不同人群。
在宗教發展的早期,便發現人類語音的某些韻律,能對熱誠的聽聞者產生出安祥、平
靜的心理作用。再者,某些層次的音調會吸引天神的到來,另一方面某些韻律聲波則
會對較低的生命像動物、蛇、甚至是精靈、鬼魂造成良好的影響。因此,祥和而正確
的音韻對護經唸誦行持而言,是相當重要的一環。

這些韻律的使用並不僅限於佛教。各大宗教中,當信徒依照其宗教的聖書誦讀經文
時,他們也使用某種特定的韻律。當回教徒朗讀可蘭經及印度教僧侶以梵語進行韋陀
梵咒吟唱時,我們能觀察到這個現象。一些令人喜愛的唱誦也為某些基督教團體行
持,特別是羅馬天主教及希臘東正教。

當這些佛經被唸誦時,三項雄偉而強大的力量被激起。這就是佛、法、僧三寶的力
量。佛教是此三寶的組合,且當三寶被懇請召集時,能夠給人類帶來極大的幸福。

一、佛陀。他已經完成所有完滿功德,成就無上正等正覺,並且教導我們神聖的真
理。雖然無上導師的色身已散逝了,但是為了眾生的利益,他的教義已被保留下來。
相似地,發現電性的人已不在人世,然而藉著運用電的知識,電性的道理便可流傳。
今天我們享受著高度的物質文明,發現電性作用實在功不可沒;發現原子能的科學家
已經去世了,但是使用原子能的知識則繼續流傳著。同樣地,經由佛陀的智慧與正覺
傳給我們的高尚教義,是人們獲取鼓舞的一股力量。當你憶念他並且尊敬他,你便發
展了對佛的信心。當你唸誦或聆聽佛語時,你便喚起了佛陀祝福的力量。

二、達摩(法)。它是佛陀提供給虔誠者靈性的慰藉,以維持平和與幸福的真理、正
義與和平的力量。當你發展悲心、虔誠、與理智時,達摩的力量會保護你並且幫助你
發展更堅定的信心與更強固的意志。於是你的心靈便成為保護自己的一股強而有力的
力量。當你依正法而行被知道時,人們及其他眾生會尊敬你。真理的力量保護你免於
各種壞的影響及邪惡力量的侵害。那些無法理解正法力量及如何依止正法而生活的
人,難以避免地會屈服于種種形式的迷信,依賴各式各樣神祗、精靈,並需要執行種
種怪異儀式的神秘力量。經由此種作為,他們只是發展出更多無知的恐懼與疑慮,而
且大量的金錢花費在此活動上。但如果人們願意發展其對正法真理的信解心,這種不
必要的浪費便可輕易地避免。法也被描述成「自然」或「自然現象」及「宇宙律


則」。那些已知曉自然力量運作道理的人,能夠透過正法來保護自己。當心靈經由完
美智識而寂靜時,種種蓋障無法在心中滋生恐懼。

三、僧伽。它是指放棄世俗家累而致力心智開展的出家修行人,他們所組成的神聖團
體。他(她)們應該是已發展道德、修持成就聖果或阿羅漢果的佛弟子。我們尊敬僧
伽和合團體,或是那些兩千五百年來保護及宣揚佛教至各地的傳道士,為佛陀教理的
守護者。由僧團所提供的服務已導引人類過著正直而高尚的生活。他(她)們是經由
記誦世尊法語,而將佛教法義傳達給我們的橋樑。

唸誦佛語作為祝福的行持,在佛陀住世時就開始存在了。後來,某些佛教國家如斯里
蘭卡、泰國及緬甸,這項行持經由組織加長的唸誦,更深入地發展成進行一整個晚上
或好幾天。信徒以極大的虔誠,參加護經唸誦活動,以全神貫注及慧智用心聆聽。一
些護經唸誦的內容則是佛陀及第一代佛弟子唸誦經文,給那些遭受疫病、饑饉、病痛
及其他天然災害的人們其心靈慰藉。據說在某一場合,當一個小孩受到某些邪惡勢力
侵害時,佛陀命令其弟子前往唸誦真言來保護這個孩子免於邪惡力量的侵犯。

經由唸誦真言的祝福服務是有效果的。當然,如果受害者曾犯某些嚴重的惡業時,也
有佛經唸誦無法奏效的情形發生。然而,某些次要的惡行業果則能被真言的振動力量
聯合那些唸誦佛經的聖僧的功德與悲心加以克服。這裡,克服惡業的業果並不是意味
將惡果完全根除,而只是暫時地和緩安撫業果的影響。

疲倦或勞累的信徒在聆聽佛經唸誦後,會感到放鬆與平靜。如此的覺受是不同於一般
世俗音樂所造成的效果,因為世俗音樂能引起我們心中的激情,並且勾起我們的情
緒,但卻無法造成靈性的虔誠與信心。

過去兩千五百年來,佛教虔誠者已經歷佛經唸誦的良好效果。我們應該試圖去理解如
何及為何在佛陀圓寂以後,佛陀親口所說的祝福語會是如此地有用。這裡要提到佛典
記載在佛陀未成佛的前世,他發大誓願要成為大覺佛陀,他嚴格行持一項完滿功德
行,即如實不妄語。絕不濫用或誤用語言文字,他溫和地說話而不蓄意傷害別人的情
感。真理的力量已成為見大悲心的佛陀所發出言語之力量來源。然而,若是缺乏虔誠
信徒的誠心與理解,單只依靠佛語的力量仍舊是無法確保祝福的。

很多人士在透過佛經唸誦的助緣來擺脫自己的病苦,及種種精神心理障礙時所經歷到
的奇蹟效果,使得他們能夠對這種形式的宗教服務生出虔誠心與信解心。

Ma"ngala Sutta.m
The Discourse on Good Fortune


[Evam-me suta.m,] Eka.m samaya.m Bhagavaa, Saavatthiya.m viharati, Jetavane Anaathapi.n.dikassa, aaraame.

I have heard that at one time the Blessed One was staying in Savatthi at Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery.

我聽說,有一次世尊住在舍衛城祇树給孤獨精舍。



Atha kho aññataraa devataa, abhikkantaaya rattiyaa abhikkanta-va.n.naa kevala-kappa.m Jetavana.m obhaasetvaa,
yena Bhagavaa ten'upasa"nkami.

Then a certain devata, in the far extreme of the night, her extreme radiance lighting up the entirety of Jeta's Grove, approached the Blessed One.

有一位天神,在深夜時分,身放強光、遍照祇树,走近世尊。



Upasa"nkamitvaa Bhagavanta.m abhivaadetvaa ekamanta.m a.t.thaasi.

On approaching, having bowed down to the Blessed One, she stood to one side.

走近跟前,向世尊頂禮後,她立於一旁。



Ekam-anta.m .thitaa kho saa devataa Bhagavanta.m gaathaaya ajjhabhaasi.

As she was standing there, she addressed a verse to the Blessed One.

立於一旁後,她對世尊說了一段偈:



"Bahuu devaa manussaa ca
ma"ngalaani acintayu.m
AAka"nkhamaanaa sotthaana.m
bruuhi ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

"Many devas & humans beings give thought to good fortune,
Desiring well-being. Tell, then, the highest good fortune."

"諸天與世人,想望吉祥、希求安甯,

以此,請宣說至高的吉祥。"



"Asevanaa ca baalaana.m
pa.n.ditaanañca sevanaa
Puujaa ca puujaniiyaana.m
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

"Not consorting with fools, consorting with the wise,
Paying homage to those who deserve homage:
This is the highest good fortune.

"遠離愚人、親近智者、禮敬值得禮敬者:
這是至高的吉祥。



Pa.tiruupa-desa-vaaso ca
pubbe ca kata-puññataa
Atta-sammaa-pa.nidhi ca
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

Living in a civilized country, having made merit in the past,
Directing oneself rightly:
This is the highest good fortune.

依往昔所修功德、生活於文明國土、志向端正:
這是至高的吉祥。



Baahu-saccañca sippañca
vinayo ca susikkhito
Subhaasitaa ca yaa vaacaa
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

Broad knowledge, skill, discipline well-mastered,
Words well-spoken:
This is the highest good fortune.

博學、廣能、精通律議、言語善宜:
這是至高的吉祥。



Maataa-pitu-upa.t.thaana.m
putta-daarassa sa"ngaho
Anaakulaa ca kammantaa
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

Support for one's parents, assistance to one's wife & children,
Jobs that are not left unfinished:
This is the highest good fortune.

奉養父母、照顧妻兒、行事周全:
這是至高的吉祥。



Daanañca dhamma-cariyaa ca
ñaatakaanañca sa"ngaho
Anavajjaani kammaani
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

Generosity, living by the Dhamma, assistance to one's relatives,
Deeds that are blameless:
This is the highest good fortune.

布施、奉法、濟助親友、諸事無咎:
這是至高的吉祥。



AAratii viratii paapaa
majja-paanaa ca saññamo
Appamaado ca dhammesu
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

Avoiding, abstaining from evil; refraining from intoxicants,
Being heedful with regard to qualities of the mind:
This is the highest good fortune.

戒諸惡業、避諸醉品、心智警醒:
這是至高的吉祥。



Gaaravo ca nivaato ca
santu.t.thii ca kataññutaa
Kaalena dhammassavana.m
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

Respect, humility, contentment, gratitude,
Hearing the Dhamma on timely occasions:
This is the highest good fortune.

恭敬、謙卑、知足、感恩、適時聞法:
這是至高的吉祥。



Khantii ca sovacassataa
sama.naanañca dassana.m
Kaalena dhamma-saakacchaa
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

Patience, compliance, seeing contemplatives,
Discussing the Dhamma on timely occasions:
This is the highest good fortune.

忍耐、受教、親見沙門、適時論法:
這是至高的吉祥。



Tapo ca brahma-cariyañca
ariya-saccaana-dassana.m
Nibbaana-sacchi-kiriyaa ca
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

Austerity, celibacy, seeing the Noble Truths,
Realizing Liberation:
This is the highest good fortune.

儉樸、獨身、親見聖谛、實證涅槃:
這是至高的吉祥。



Phu.t.thassa loka-dhammehi
citta.m yassa na kampati
Asoka.m viraja.m khema.m
etam-ma"ngalam-uttama.m.

A mind that, when touched by the ways of the world,
Is unshaken, sorrowless, dustless, secure:

This is the highest good fortune.

心觸世法,不動、不哀,無染、安住:
這是至高的吉祥。



Etaadisaani katvaana
sabbattham-aparaajitaa
Sabbattha sotthi.m gacchanti
tan-tesa.m ma"ngalam-uttamanti."

天空或地上,衆生[2]來聚集,願衆生安樂,汝等應諦聽,如來[3]所說法,(千萬劫難遇)。

天地諸神祗,汝等應諦聽,人民日與夜,獻奉諸供品[4],應慈愛彼等,精進施佑護。

於此處他界,或於諸天上[5] ,無論何種寶[6],難與如來等,唯於佛陀[7]中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

釋迦[8]之聖者,親證般涅槃[9],解脫於貪欲,無生[10]最尊上,別無有他法,可與其比倫,實爾達摩[11]中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

佛陀所讚歎,修定念相繼,淨念無間斷[12],(可證殊勝果),實爾達摩中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

四雙八輩[13]者,賢者所稱讚,佛陀之弟子,施彼得大果[14],唯諸僧伽中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

喬達摩[15]教中,離貪比丘衆,堅心勤修持,進趨不死城,享受涅槃樂,於諸僧伽[16]中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

如石柱[17]立地,不爲四風撼,佛子見聖諦,真信亦如是,唯諸僧伽中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

瞭解聖諦人,極崇八正道[18],世尊之教法,具最上智慧,彼諸難調服,亦不受八生[19],於諸僧伽中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

慧眼證道者,遠離於三法[20],謂身見懷疑,戒取諸邪儀,解脫四惡趣[21],不作六逆罪[22],於諸僧伽中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

由諸身口意,彼所作惡業,悉皆不覆藏,智慧見道者,若造新惡業,實爲難思議,於諸僧伽中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

猶如叢林頂,初夏花盛開[23],佛陀微妙法,指引涅槃路,教證臻至善,唯於佛陀中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

無比至善者,真知[24]善施捨,圓滿戒定慧[25],廣演四真諦[26],唯於佛陀中[27],具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

不顧於過去[28],不欣於將來[29],永斷於生死,貪欲不再生,命盡如油燈,油耗而寂滅[30],於諸僧伽中,具足如斯寶,由此真諦故,願一切安樂。

(佛說此經己,爾時薩迦天王等聞法歡喜,頂禮三寶,願一切衆生,信受奉行,得大安樂,即於佛前,以偈而贊三寶曰)[31]:

天空或地上,來集此神祗,我等應敬禮,圓滿佛陀尊,人天所崇敬,願一切安樂。

天空或地上,來集此神祗,我等應敬禮,圓滿達摩尊,人天所崇敬,願一切安樂。

註釋:

1.[三寶經]也叫[寶經]。關於此經的來源,各註釋書所說的是因爲吠舍離(Vesali)城先發生饑荒,而後鬼怪和蟲災爲患,造成許多人死亡。居民惶恐不安,在不知所措時,有人提議邀請佛陀從王舍城來此解難,離車國(Licchavi)的皇族立即派人去王舍城邀請佛陀, 佛陀接受了邀請,與衆多比丘到時, 吠舍離城即下了一場大雨,把饑荒餓死的死屍都沖走了,空氣也清新了,佛陀於是開示此經,並命阿難陀在吠舍離城四處誦唸此經,並以佛缽遍灑誦經水,鬼怪受不了,都逃離吠舍離城。此城居民才恢復安寧。

2.衆生包括三界裡欲界的六道衆生;色界及無色界的十六種衆生。這些衆生包括一切的胎、卵、濕、化的四生。

3.如來,Tathagata, ‘如’指如實知一切相,如實斷煩惱,如實說正覺法;‘來’是成就解脫。乘如實道而成就正等正覺。

4.人們都在日夜祭祀天神,爲了祭奉甚至造了衆多殺業。他們不論順境或逆境,都在向各種神明禱告,祈求平安吉祥,但幾乎沒人會想,這些天神也是貪瞋癡跟人一樣嚴重的眾生,他們一樣會死,佛未涅槃前,有善根的衆天神尚且向佛求教,因為他們知道佛的偉大,是大智大覺者。天神死時會有五衰耗之相:頭上花萎,衣裳垢穢,身體臭穢,腋下汗出,不樂本座(衆天女厭離)。

5.天上是指從四天王天(Catumaharaia)以上至色究竟天(Akanittha)的二十四層天。其中有欲界六天:即四天王天,仞利天,夜摩天,兜率天,化樂天,他化樂天;色界十八天:即梵身天,梵輔天,大梵天,少光天,無量光天,光音天,少淨天,無量淨天,遍淨天,少福天,福生天,廣果天,和五阿那含天 (無煩天,無熱天,善現天,善見天,色究竟天)及無想天。

6.寶是Ratana的義譯,Ra 指吸引,ta指引導,渡過。意為依三寶而得渡過輪迴之生死苦海。

7.佛陀是自己覺悟生死輪迴之真相並擺脫輪迴之苦和渡過輪迴苦海的大聖者,他能宣示四聖諦及教導八聖道修行法的無上正等正無者,他也是值得受人類及天神供養的應供者,他已調服及斷除所有大小微細的煩惱,故此他無有任何世間的系縛。因此他有十個名號;如來,應供,正等覺,明行足,善逝,世間解,無上士調禦丈夫,天人師,佛,世尊。

8.釋迦是指釋迦族,聖者是指釋迦牟尼佛(Sakyamuni Buddha),牟尼意為寂靜,即釋迦族的寂靜者。

9.涅槃,Nibbana的音譯,意為寂滅,指一切煩惱的熄滅,包括求生的欲望。請看下面的詳細解釋。

10.無生,阿羅漢,辟支佛與佛皆證無生,不再在三界裡受生。生是指四生:胎生、卵生、濕生、及化生。往生去西方極樂世界仍未脫離輪迴。

11.‘達摩’是指‘法’,巴利文Dhamma。泛指佛覺悟之法;有三法印、四聖諦、八正道、十二緣起法等。

12.‘淨念無間斷’是指定的境界,心中無有想念,只有正念。

13.四雙八輩即是:向須陀洹道及須陀洹果,向斯陀含道及斯陀含果,向阿那含道及阿那含果,向阿羅漢道及阿羅漢果。請看下面的詳細解釋。

14.佈施是六度或六波羅蜜之一(佈施、忍辱、持戒、精進、禪定、智慧),也是十度之一(佈施、忍辱、持戒、精進、出離、真實、決意、慈、捨、智慧),大果是指阿羅漢果。佈施也是六隨念之一(念佛、念法、念僧、念戒、念施、念天),本經所涉及的就是六隨念,它們是修行人們生於天界的主要原因,並能趣向涅槃。

15.喬達摩是Gotama是釋迦牟尼佛的俗姓,佛俗姓名爲悉達多喬達摩Siddhartha Gotama。

16.僧伽,巴利文Sangha,指四雙八輩修行者,這可能包括出家的五衆;即比丘、比丘尼、沙彌、沙彌尼、及式叉摩那(Sikkhamana);和在家的五戒優婆塞(Upasaka)、優婆夷(Upasika);及八戒白衣男、白衣女。

17.‘石柱’是仞利天(三十三天)的天王帝釋的主要柱子一般高而堅固。註釋書所說的是豎立於城內或城外的高大八角木柱或磚柱,柱基極深,不易動搖,用以保佑城市。

18.四聖諦裡道諦的八正道:即正見,正思惟,正語,正行,正命,正精進,正念,及正定。

19.證初果(Sotapana,須陀洹果)的聖者,只會回來人天道受生七次就涅槃,所以說不受八生。

20.這三法是十結(Samyojanas) 的前三結;即是懷疑、戒禁取、和身見。

21.四惡趣是地獄、餓鬼、畜生、及阿修羅(Asura)。

22.六逆罪是殺父、殺母、殺阿羅漢、出佛身血、破和合僧團、邪信。

23.這是比喻佛法如森林裡叢林頂盛開的花。

24.佛陀是真正知道諸法實相的無上正等正覺者。

25.戒定慧學,即是三學; 戒學、定學、及慧學。

26.四真諦,即四聖諦;苦諦、集諦、滅諦、及道諦。

27.黃謹良所譯的[小部]譯作“如是法寶,是最上寶。”

28.執著於過去有一個我的心已經熄滅。

29.執著於未來有一個我的心不再生起。

30.覺者的心猶如一盞油盡燈滅的枯燈,再也點燃不起來。所有履行八正道者都會證涅槃。佛陀說完此句,手指著一盞供給某某天神的油燈,那油燈即刻熄滅。

31.佛陀宣說完此經,仞利天王帝釋(Sakka, 薩迦天王)就法喜充滿,因此就說了這最後三偈,讚頌佛寶,法寶,及僧寶。註釋書說明佛陀命阿難陀在吠舍離城一連七天宣說此經。

Yanidha bhutani sama-gatani
Whatever beings are here assembled,
Bhumma niva yani va antalikkhe
whether terrestial or celestial,
Sabbe va bhuta sumana bhavantu
may every being be happy !
Athopi sakkacca sunantu bhasitam
Moreover, may they attentively listen to my words.

Tasmahi bhuta nisametha sabbe
Accordingly give good heed, all ye beings!
Mettam karotha manusiya pajaya
Show your love to humans who,
Diva ca ratto ca haranti ye balim
day and night, bring offerings to you,
Tasmahi ne rakkhatha appamatta
Wherefore guard them zealously.

Yankinci vittam idhava huram va
Whatsoever treasure there be - either here or in the world beyond,
Saggesu vayam ratanam panitam
or whatsoever precious jewel in the heavens -
Nano-samam atthi tathagatena
Yet there is none is comparable to the Accomplished One.
Idampi Buddhe ratanam panitam
Truly, in the Buddha is this precious jewel found.
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this truth, may there be happiness.

Khayam viragam amatam panitam
That cessation, Passion free, Immortality Supreme,
Yadajjhaga sakyamuni samahito
Through concentration, the tranquil sage of the Sakyas realised:
Natena dhammena samatthi kinci
There is nought comparable with that Dhamma.
Idampi Dhamme ratanam panitam
Truly, in the Dhamma is this precious jewel.
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this truth, may there be happiness!


Yambuddha settho parivannayi sucim
That sanctity praised by the Buddha Supreme,
Samadhi manantari kanna mahu
is described as `concentration without interruption'.
Samadhina tena samo na vijjati
There is nought like that concentration.
Idampi Dhamme ratanam panitam
Truly, in the Dhamma is this precious jewel.
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this Truth, may there be happiness!

Ye puggala attha satam pasattha
Those eight Individuals, praised by the virtuous
Cattari etani yugani honti
They constitue four pairs.
Te dakkhineyya sugatassa savaka
They, the worthy of offerings, the disciples of the Welcome One,
Etesu dinnani mahapphalani

Te patti patta amatam vigayha
exempt (from passion), they have attained to that which should be attained.
Laddha mudha nibbutim bhunjamana
And plunging into the Deathless, they enjoy the peace obtained without price.

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this Truth, may there be happiness!

Yathinda khilo pathavim sito siya
Just as a firm post, sunk in the earth,
Catubbhi vatebhi asampa kampiyo
Cannot be shaken by the four winds;
Tathupamam sappurisam vadami
Even so do I declare him to be a righteous person



Yo ariya saccani avecca passati
who thoroughly perceives the Noble Truths.

By this Truth, may there be happiness!

Ye ariya saccani vibhava-yanti
Those who comprehend clearly the Noble Truths,
Gambhira-pannena sudesitani
Well taught by Him of wisdom deep,
Kincapi te honti bhusappa matta
Although they may be mightily neglectful
Na te bhavam atthamam adiyanti
they can never undergo an eighth birth

Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel.
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this Truth, may there be happiness!

Saha vassa dassana sampadaya
For him with acquisition of Insight,
Tayassu dhamma jahita bhavanti
Three things are abandoned, namely,
Sakkaya-ditthi vici-kicchi-tanca
self-illusion, doubt and
Silabbatam vapi yadatthi kinci
indulgence in (wrongful) rites and ceremonies, whatever there are.
Catu hapayehica vippa mutto
From the four states of misery, he is absolutely freed,
Cha cabhi thanani abhabbo katum
and is incapable of committing the six heinous crimes.
Idampi Sanghe ratanam panitam
Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel.
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this Truth, may there be happiness!

Kincapi so kammam karoti papakam
Whatever evil actions he does,
Kayena vaca uda cetasa va
whether by body, speech or mind.
Abhabbo so tassa paticcha-daya
He is not capable of hiding it;
Abhabbata dittha padassa vutta
For it has been said that such an act is impossible for one who has seen the
Path.

Vanappa gumbhe yatha phussitagge
Like unto the woodland groves with blossomed treetops

has the Sublime Doctrine,
Nibbana gamim paramam hitaya
that leads to Nibbana, been taught for the Highest Good.

Idha tathaagato loke uppanno araha.m sammaa-sambuddho,

Here, One attained to the Truth, Worthy & Rightly Self-awakened, has appeared in the world,

在此,如來、阿羅漢、正自覺悟者,已現於世,


Dhammo ca desito niyyaaniko upasamiko parinibbaaniko sambodhagaamii sugatappavedito.

And Dhamma is explained, leading out (of samsara), calming, tending toward total Nibbana, going to self-awakening, declared by one who has gone the good way.

所講解的法,引導出離(輪回)、得甯靜、趨向究竟涅槃、得自覺醒、由善逝者宣說。


Mayan-ta.m dhamma.m sutvaa eva.m jaanaama,

Having heard the Dhamma, we know this:

我們聞法而知:


Jaatipi dukkhaa jaraapi dukkhaa mara.nampi dukkha.m,

Birth is stressful, aging is stressful, death is stressful,

生爲苦、老爲苦、 死爲苦,


Soka-parideva-dukkha-domanassupaayaasaapi dukkhaa,

Sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair are stressful,

憂、哀、痛、悲、慘苦,


Appiyehi sampayogo dukkho piyehi vippayogo dukkho yamp'iccha.m na labhati tampi dukkha.m,

Association with things disliked is stressful, separation from things liked is stressful, not getting what one wants is stressful,

與不愛者相處苦、與愛者離別苦、所求不得苦,


Sa"nkhittena pañcupaadaanakkhandhaa dukkhaa,

In short, the five clinging-aggregates are stressful,

簡言之,五種執取之蘊苦,

Born of the true Dhamma, endowed with such virtues as good practice,

由真法而生,有這般善行修持的功德,



Yo.t.thaabbidho ariya-puggala-sa"ngha-se.t.tho,

The supreme Sa"ngha formed of the eight types of Noble Ones,

無上僧伽由八輩聖者組成,


Siilaadidhamma-pavaraasaya-kaaya-citto:

Guided in body & mind by such principles as morality:

以戒德指導身與心:


Vandaam'aha.m tam-ariyaana-ga.na.m susuddha.m.

I revere that group of Noble Ones well-purified.

我崇敬清淨的聖者僧團。


Sa"ngho yo sabba-paa.niina.m
Sara.na.m khemam-uttama.m.

The Sa"ngha that for all beings is the secure, the highest refuge,

僧伽是一切衆生安全、至高的歸依處,



Tatiyaanussati.t.thaana.m
Vandaami ta.m sirenaha.m,

The third theme for recollection: I revere it with my head.

第三次憶念,我俯首頂禮它。



Sa"nghassaahasmi daaso (daasii) va
Sa"ngho me saamikissaro.

I am the Sa"ngha's servant, the Sa"ngha is my sovereign master,

我是僧伽的仆侍,僧伽是我的主導宗師,



Sa"ngho dukkhassa ghaataa ca
Vidhaataa ca hitassa me.

The Sa"ngha is a destroyer of suffering & a provider of welfare for me.

僧伽爲我摧毀苦,給我幸福。



Sa"nghassaaha.m niyyaademi
Sariirañjiivitañcida.m.

To the Sa"ngha I dedicate this body & this life of mine.

我對僧伽奉獻此身此世。



Vandanto'ha.m (Vandantii'ha.m) carissaami
Sa"nghassopa.tipannata.m.

I will fare with reverence for the Sa"ngha's good practice.

我將奉行對僧伽善修的崇敬。



N'atthi me sara.na.m añña.m,
Sa"ngho me sara.na.m vara.m:

I have no other refuge, the Sa"ngha is my foremost refuge:

我別無依止,僧伽是我的至高依止:



Etena sacca-vajjena,
Va.d.dheyya.m satthu-saasane.

By the speaking of this truth, may I grow in the Teacher's instruction.

以此真語之力,願我在導師的教誨中成長。



Sa"ngha.m me vandamaanena (vandamaanaaya)
Ya.m puñña.m pasuta.m idha,
Sabbe pi antaraayaa me,
Maahesu.m tassa tejasaa.

Through the power of the merit here produced by my reverence for the Sa"ngha, may all my obstructions cease to be.

以我在此禮敬僧伽的功德之力,願我的一切障礙止息。

Kaayena vaacaaya va cetasaa vaa,
Sa"nghe kukamma.m pakata.m mayaa ya.m,
Sa"ngho pa.tigga.nhatu accayanta.m,
Kaalantare sa.mvaritu.m va sa"nghe.

Whatever bad kamma I have done to the Sa"ngha
by body, by speech, or by mind,
may the Sa"ngha accept my admission of it,
so that in the future I may show restraint toward the Sa"ngha.

凡是我對僧伽所作的任何惡業,無論身、語、意,
願僧伽接受我的認錯,未來我會對僧伽恭敬謹慎。

 經、經偈課誦的作用和意義:

1.禮贊佛陀是每一佛教徒在任何儀式之前爲表尊敬的工作,只是當作對佛陀的感恩與讚歎而作,之後才作三皈依。

2.三皈依 當一個佛教徒必須皈依三寶爲自己的引導,所有已經爲佛教徒被鼓勵在日常生活中唱誦三寶的攝受。佛陀:曾住世而在一切有情中的第一。佛法:因佛陀而存在和被他宣導。 僧團:他的法支持者和實行者 佛陀:一切有情之利益的推動者。佛法:佛陀爲了一切有情之利益的需要而給予存在。 僧團:爲了利益的得到而實踐者。在佛教裏,皈依三寶對跟隨者而言是崇敬的奉獻物件。功德:懂得敬重師長,得至於廣大的信、念、慧、福,多喜悅,克服怖畏恐懼,能忍苦,得與僧伽同住之想,來生得善處。

3.五戒 五戒的唱誦與持守,是佛教家庭裏早上第一件事和晚上最後一件事,同時也是所有佛教節日或會議之開端。他們被提醒不要背這些戒而行,同時爲了更好實踐諸工作在宗教活動上而淨化他們自己。這些戒不是誡,因此佛教徒以自由意識地持守。功德:尊敬順從於戒學,與具戒者同樣的生活,殷勤不放逸,無自責等的怖畏,得至於廣大的信等,多喜悅,雖不通達上位,但來生得善處。

4.隨念三寶 爲了對三寶表敬意,隨念三寶必須被唱誦。這些經偈解說三寶的品質與德行。經由唱誦這些詩偈而理解三寶品質,進而生信。這些高品質的解說被佛陀自己合一敍述在很多經典中,同時他忠告佛教徒無論來自外在根源生起恐懼時或經由內在刺激的恐懼時,唱誦這些經偈和憶念佛法僧,這些恐懼會消失。因爲佛法僧是解脫種種煩惱和障礙如貪瞋癡無明等。要知道即使天神他們也受制於恐懼。

5.八戒 在很多佛教國家裡,虔誠佛教徒在滿月或新月的晨早去佛寺花24小時如一個修行人持守這八戒。
  持守的意義是斷除在物質和感官世界裏日常忙碌生活而開發精神培育、自我學習和解脫。很多人不熟悉生命的佛教方式而無法瞭解讓他們自己遠離物質和感官世界裡跳舞、唱歌、戲劇、塗香、裝飾和其他致醉物等的真實意義。總之,不是強迫每一佛教徒要持守這些戒。持守這些戒24小時之後自由回到他正常生活軌道。不久就遠離這些世俗無聊舉動的人能平靜他的慾望和訓練心不要當有如種種慾望的奴隸一樣。這些娛樂只有增長心的種種渴望和激發衝動的種種感受,而這些將阻礙人精神培育的進步。這只是時時以這樣方式自我訓練能克服他的種種(嗜好)弱點和能自我控制。當不能遠離或拒絕種種慾望時,這個修習帶給他知足和不被擊敗。

6.禮敬供養 當供養燈、花、飯食、水和香等時,這些偈必須被唱誦。以佛陀的名義這些東西的供養,是一些人尚不能理解真實意義的另一種修習。像這些東西的供養給一個聖人事實上是東方文明的風俗。這只是一種表尊敬的標誌。虔誠佛教徒也以佛法僧名義供養一些東西。這寬大的動作給予他們無上的快樂、寧靜與安心之意味。另一方面博學佛教徒常常用這相同的供養當作禪定的物件。每一個油燈或蠟燭燈焰,以及花被比擬爲物質身體與生命。燈的供養也象徵經由燈而無明與黑暗的驅散。燈焰和它的明亮之存在、花朵的美麗、香的芳香,以及這樣明亮和美麗的最後消失退色只是顯示它們的無常。因此,所有這些自然現象能被拿起如適當的所緣來禪修。供壇上花朵顯示最美麗之一和自然的各種事物中最短暫的。這些供養同樣必須是值得稱讚的行爲。因此花些時間在寺院供養一些事物和唱誦經偈一點也不是浪費時間。佛教徒供養和唱誦不是取悅佛陀,而是使他們自己歡喜。在開始每天工作之前,最好以感恩心先供養一些事物給佛陀,當作尊敬一位指引我們正確道路得救護的象徵。

  然而,佛教徒不要認爲以佛陀名義供養一些東西和唱誦就是已作或完成任務。成爲好佛教徒必須作更多,那就是依教奉行。不要想供養一些事物給佛而他的過失就會被洗除。

7.《吉祥經》一般祝福,包含38件吉祥事。在吉祥場合如婚禮、喬遷慶宴、祝賀和其他各種祝福禮拜儀式中使用。這經告訴我們佛陀教法不是侷限在宗教的哲學和心理方面,而是更延伸到社會服務的範圍、自我調伏的培養(對宗教和道德環境是根本的)。因爲這些經偈被認爲是佛陀所宣說最原始的,佛教徒應恭敬對待它們。

8.《三寶經》這部經是佛陀爲了祝福跟隨者避免飢餓、疾病、惡念和其他各種不幸而宣說的。任何時候有流行諸恐怖、飢餓恐怖和源自於惡念的恐怖,佛陀宣說這特殊的經。隨著唱誦這部經,很多人得到利益,而且種種不幸避開。此經以各種層次解說三寶的品質,而且讚嘆在這世界中沒有其他寶石可與三寶比較。在每一經偈最後佛陀祝福每人說:「以這個真理,祝福吉祥安樂。」佛陀在這部經中也邀請集合來聽經的諸天神啟發他們的慈悲給人類和保護那些任何時候做一些值得讚嘆的行爲而回向功德給諸天的人們。提醒佛教徒們晨早或每天上床前唱誦此經,藉由祈求或禪修。和萬一生病或其他障礙,通常出家師父被邀請去他家唱誦這些重要的經。聽說即使釋迦天王聽此經之後,也歡喜並且以最後三經偈禮敬三寶。

9.《慈愛經》避免非人侵犯。佛陀教導去森林修行而被非人干擾的500比丘如何去散發慈悲給一切眾生。藉由唱誦此重要的經散發慈心而克服種種障礙,爲他們自己找到寧靜和安樂,也幫忙其他人這樣修習而快樂住。

10.禮敬三寶 克服恐慌、害怕、恐懼

11.無畏偈 避免惡兆、惡星體、惡夢

12.緣起法 強化眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意、命根和心理

13.《蘊護咒》避免蛇、爬蟲、蠍子、蜈蚣、蜘蛛、壁虎和老鼠侵犯

14.回向功德 爲了回向佛教徒產生的諸福德其他人而唱誦回向偈,這也是佛陀種種宗旨之一。無論何時作了一些值得讚嘆行爲,要意念已經往生者或其他人們。經由這樣做,他們享受利益和被安撫。這個動作本身也鼓勵其他人去做相同值得讚嘆的行爲。同時也是一種渴望去除惡影響而繼續值得讚嘆的行爲。

(The Buddhas, the noble men who drank the nectar of the four Noble Truths,
Having come to the victory seat, having defeated Mara together with his mount)

2. Ta-nhan-karadayo Buddha, Atthavisati-nayaka

(These Buddhas, the 28 leaders, the sovereign sages beginning with Tanhankara are all established on the crown of my head.)

3. Sise patithito maiham, Buddho dhammo dawilo cane
Sangho patithito maiham, Ure sabba-guna karo
(The Buddha is established in my head, the Dharma in my two eyes,
The Sangha----the mind of all virtues----is established in my chest.)

4. Hadaye me Anuruddho, Sariputto ca dakkhine

(Anuraddha is in my heart, and Sariputta on my right.
Kondanna is behind me, and Moggallana on my left.)

(The great sage, the mind of virtue, Elder Kumarakassapa, the brilliant speaker, is constantly in my mouth.)

Tehra panca-ime janta, Nalate tilaka mama
(Five elder---Punna Angulimala, Upali, Nanda, & Sivali---have arisen as ausipicious marks at the middle of my forehead.)

9. Se sha ti Thi-Mahatehra, Vijita jina sawaka Etesi ti-mahatehra, Jitawanto jitnorasa
Ja lanta sila-tejenai, Angamange Susanthidai
(The rest of the 80 great leaders----victors,
disciples of the victorious Buddha, sons of the victorious Buddha,
shining with the majesty of moral virtue are established in the various parts of my body.)

10. Ratanam purato asi, Dakkhine Metta-suttakam
Dhajhakam pachato asi, Wame Angulimalakam
Khandha-Mora-parittanca, Atanatiya-suttakam
Akase chadanam asi, Sesa pakara-santhita
(The Ratana Sutta is in front of me, the Mettra Sutta to my right.
The Dhajagga Sutta is behind me, the Angulimala Paritta to my left.
The Khandha & Mora Parittas and the Atanatiya Sutta are a roof in space above me. The remaining suttas are established as a fortress wall around me.)

11. Jinanam-rama-samtutta, Satta-pakara-lankatawan
Wata-pittadi-sanjata, Bahirajjhattupaddava
Asesa winayam yantu, Ananta-jina-tejasa
(Bound by the power of the Victors? I realm, seven fortress walls arrayed. Against them, may all misfortununes within & without----caused by such things as wind or bile----be destroyed without remainder through the majesty of the unending Victor.)

12. Wa..sato mesaki cche na, Sada Sambuddha-panjare
Jina-panjara-mahjha-mhi, Wiharantam mahitale
Sada palentu-mam sabbe, Teh maha-purisasabha
(As I dwell, in all my affairs, always in the cage of the Self-awakened One, Living grounded in the midst of the Victors, I am always guarded by all of those great noble men)

13. Isay-wamanto sugutto surakho
Jina ukbhave na-jitupadavo
Dhammanubhave na-jitari-sangho
San-tainubaway, Napitantaraiyo
Saddhamma nubhava-palito, Carami jina-panjaray..ti.
(Thus am I utterly well-sheltered, well-protected.
Through the might of the Victors, misfortunes are vanquished.
Through the might of the Dhamma, hordes of enemies are vanquished.
Through the might of the Sangha, dangers are vanquished.
Guarded by the might of the True Dhamma, I live in the Victor's Cage.)
