"At the same time, some offshore-account holders are discovering thattax havens have their downside, too. When Icelandic banks werenationalised, British customers who had offshore accounts with thesebanks found themselves without the depositor protection plans theywould enjoy in the UK. This has led to angry exchanges between the UKand, in particular, the Isle of Man over Britain's responsibilities tothese account holders. Last week, Timms announced an agreement withGuernsey to exchange tax information."

"US to seek client names from UBS in tax case US prosecutors are expected to confront Swiss banking giant UBSwith a broad subpoena for the names of wealthy American clients who mayhave used its services to avoid income taxes, according to lawyers andothers involved in the case."

"In a step that would have once been unthinkable in the rarefiedworld of Swiss banking, UBS will shut about 19,000 accounts thatprosecutors suspect have gone undeclared to the Internal RevenueService.
UBS will transfer the assets to other banks or otherdivisions within UBS, or will mail checks directly to the accountholders, creating paper trails for federal prosecutors who areexamining whether UBS clients used such accounts to evade taxes.
The clients now face stark choices: They can cash their checks, andthereby alert the authorities to any potential wrongdoing, or not cashthem, effectively losing their money."
