Visitors at a hospital in Wales were left stunned after a man dressed in what many described as a Grim Reaper costume climbed onto the roof and stared down at people below while carrying a long knife.

The incident happened at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital in St Asaph, Denbighshire, where 26-year-old Leon Gillespie appeared on the roof wearing an all-black outfit. Gillespie later claimed it was a crow costume, but witnesses said it closely resembled the Grim Reaper, alarming patients, visitors, and hospital staff.

Authorities said Gillespie also made loud noises from the rooftop, prompting a major emergency response. Four police vehicles and fire crews were dispatched before officers safely brought him down. He did not provide a reason for his actions.

Gillespie later pleaded guilty to causing a nuisance on National Health Service (NHS) premises without reasonable excuse. A court in North Wales ordered him to pay £100 in fines, £100 in prosecution costs, and £50 in compensation. During the proceedings, he also admitted to separate shoplifting offenses involving pet supplies, food, and drinks from local stores.

Following the incident, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward abuse, aggression, and disruptive behavior at its hospitals.

For patients already facing illness or uncertainty, a hospital should be a place of reassurance—not another source of fear.
