Yoshua Bengio, along with a group of other leading AI experts, has proposed a definition of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) as "an AI that can match or exceed the cognitive versatility and proficiency of a well-educated adult".
This definition emphasizes that AGI should not only perform well in a few narrow, specialized domains but also possess the breadth of skills and depth of cognitive function characteristic of human intelligence across multiple domains. To operationalize this definition, Bengio and his co-authors used the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory, a widely validated model of human intelligence, to evaluate AI systems across ten core cognitive domains, including:
