I wasn't born yesterday, minister tells The Edge

Abdul Rahman Dahlan has rained Twitter-fire on the statement from The Edge publisher Ho Kay Tat regarding the financial daily’s articles on 1MDB.
Dismissing the claim that the reports were not politically motivated, he said: "The Edge said this was not political. Excuse me. I was not born yesterday. Don't patronise."
He argued that The Edge had no qualms "roping in the opposition to do their bidding" instead of remaining neutral.
The newly minted BN strategic communication director pointed out The Edge also admitted procuring stolen data from former PetroSaudi International executive Xavier Andre Justo.
"Finally, The Edge admitted they got stolen data from Justo! I wonder if the Thais didn't arrest Justo, would they admit it?" he tweeted.
In his statement, Ho said early this year, the publication was informed that "someone" was willing to share information that would shed light on 1MDB's joint-venture with PSI.
"We were not told who he was before we met him.
"This person, whom we shall not name, showed us thousands and thousands of emails and document attachments.
"We read scores of them and were convinced of their authenticity because of the sheer volume and the email trails. We subsequently had an IT forensic expert confirmed that there was no reason to worry that they were fakes,” he said.
Why IT experts called?
However, Abdul Rahman dismissed this explanation as well.
"The Edge said they used the stolen data from Justo because they were dead sure the data were not fake. How convenient!" he said.
"If The Edge is sure the data were not tampered with why then experts said they were indeed. If The Edge unsure why use it?" he added.
Despite the 'confession', the urban well-being, housing and local government minister warned that "the issue is far from over".
"Questions that need to be asked: Did anyone pay for the stolen and tampered data?
"Did anyone complain about not getting paid or being paid late for the stolen data? Did anyone then ask someone to pressure the buyer to honour his commitment to pay?" he added.
Abdul Rahman also questioned who tempered with the data as acknowledged by the Thai authorities.
Justo, a Swiss national, is under the detention of Thai police for allegedly attempting to blackmail his former employer.
He is also said to have leaked the documents to several parties.

| magnus I congratulate The Edge for their journalistic prowess in unearthng the likely truths behind the 1MDB financial scandal that would have brought down any government that was operating on any proper democratic government of real substance basis in the real world. But having said that, I am concerned that The Edge revealed its source to the authorities, as reported in this article. That confidentiality between journalist and source is a non-negotiable principle and universally accepted and observed standard in journalism that protects both journalistic integrity and the public interest. Journalists have even been prepared to go to jail for contempt of court to protect their integrity and their sources. So why did The Edge reveal its source so readily to the authorities? Was The Edge bullied into doing so, with threatened closure perhaps, by the likes of this ARD government twit?

| SRMan BN guys are used to reading reports in BN controlled media which normally sing praises of the coalition or the government. Thus when a non-BN controlled media exposes a scam such as 1MDB, they are practically caught off-guard and do not know what to say or rebut. Their standard reply: "such reports are politically motivated" or "the people must be involved in some sinister plot to overthrow the sitting government." Remember Home Minister Ahmad Zahid's reply, "you eat the chilli, then you feel the heat" when asked by The Edge about its purported wrong reporting. But lately, they did try with something new - Lester Melanyi's videoed so-called expose of Sarawak Report. But the attempt bungled, fell flat and instead make a fool of the 'director'.

But going through your many comments and explanations, and the logic reflected in them, I can only conclude that you were probably born late this afternoon. You seem distressed that The Edge took measures to verify the authenticity of the material passed to them. You call that "convenient"? I would describe it as being cautious and sensible, hardly your cup of tea. Let us even admit that the data was stolen and The Edge paid for them. So? The issue is the substance, the veracity of the information in them, that a shameless bunch of UMNO crooks was robbing the nation blind. That can be overlooked? If all the damaging statements and revelations made by Rafizi, Tony Pua and the others are so uniformly fake, why is your Bugis chief Najib not suing everyone's pants off? Maybe he was born yesterday and his globular nether regions are not yet fully developed.

| iiiizzzziiii Bravo to Ahmad Rahman Dahlan in defending 1MDB and PM. The choice of word he used is a dead give away of the propaganda nature of the argument. He keeps using the the word "tampered". Why? Where is the prove that the data or evidence had been tampered with? It is so easy to point and accuse without showing proof that the data had been tampered with. So, please show proof or else this minister is just blowing hot air and definitely was born yesterday.
