PUTRAJAYA: The message circulated via chat application Whatsapp that the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) would be disbursed earlier is untrue.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan said the message went viral and it was made to look like a message sent by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“The message was circulated around and I want the public to know that it is untrue. I have also checked it with the Prime Minister's Office,” he said today.
Ahmad said BR1M payments would only be disbursed on Thursday, brought forward to aid victims of the floods in certain states in the country.
He added that he would be meeting Najib’s press secretary to discuss possible action to be taken against those who spread the false message.
“To file a police report is up to the Prime Minister's Office but this is unacceptable as it has made several people angry as they were made to believe that the payment was made to their accounts earlier,” he said.
On the BR1M payment itself, Ahmad said that new applications and updating of the current BR1M applications had been extended to Jan 31.
“For those who updated by Dec 31 last year, payment will be made to 4.9 million recipients on Jan 15, while those who have yet to update their details will receive it on Feb 12 (2.9 million recipients)," Ahmad said.
He urged those who have yet to register or update their details such as the new beneficiary column to do so at the BR1M portal or by visiting any Inland Revenue Board branch.
On the Family Bereavement Scheme, Ahmad said starting Feb 2, next-of-kin can present the original identification card of the deceased and death certificate at Bank Simpanan Nasional to receive RM1,000.
