2014 Toyota Corolla Panned By IIHS For Poor Performance In Small Overlap Front Crash Test

Toyota's eleventh generation US market Toyota Corolla earned only a 'Marginal' rating (the second lowest) in the latest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) small overlap front crash test.

The IIHS noted significant intrusion by the door hinge pillar and instrument panel into the cabin, indicating that survival space was not well maintained.

IIHS' report said "Structural performance was poor and the driver's space was seriously compromised by intruding structure. Measures from the dummy indicate that injuries to the left lower leg would be possible in a real-world crash of this severity. The dummy's head contacted the front airbag but rolled to the left as the steering wheel moved 4 inches to the right. That left the head vulnerable to contact with forward structures like the windshield pillar and dashboard. The side curtain airbag deployed and had sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with forward side structure, such as the roof rail and interior door panel, and outside objects."

IIHS' rating ranges from Good, Acceptable, Marginal to Poor.

The small overlap front crash test is a very severe form of test that involves hitting a car travelling at 64 km/h with 25 per cent overlap against a rigid barrier. Several organizations have said the use of a rigid barrier is not realistic as the majority of collisions involve other vehicles rather than a static rigid object like a tree or a utility pole.

NCAP (New Car Assesment Program) tests conducted in Europe, Japan, ASEAN, Australia, China and South America typically involve a deformable barrier, set at 40 per cent overlap, with car car hitting the barrier at the same 64 km/h (below), which global NCAP says is more representative of real world driving conditions.

While the Corolla did not perform well in the small overlap front test, it earned the maximum 'Good' rating for moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints and seats test.

The US market Corolla is different from the model that Malaysian buyers will be getting in 2014. Our local market Corolla will be similar to the European market Corolla sedan model. The all-new 2014 Toyota Corolla Altis is expected to debut in Malaysia in early 2014.

很多车都很难看。。除了honda accord, volvo s60..应该是

厂商的高度重视。

  根据IIHS在2009年公布的一项调查结果显示，车辆正向偏角碰撞所导致的重大损伤和死亡占车辆正向撞击伤害的25%。针对这种情况，IIHS设立了一项全新的碰撞测试项目——正面四分之一碰撞测试，又称小重叠面碰撞测试。此项全新测试规定测试车辆以时速60公里的速度撞向一个高1.5米的固定坚硬障碍物，此时撞击力将集中在车辆侧架外的一个狭窄部分（正面四分之一处），该区域通常是正面撞击中吸收能量的主要结构，因此该测试要求被测车辆具有很强的客舱结构。

  IIHS的相关负责人表示，类似于此类测试之前从来没有进行过，最终的测试结果也出人意料。在首批参加测试的12款车型中，仅有三款车型达到了及格以上的评定结果，分别是沃尔沃S60、讴歌TL和英菲尼迪G系，而其余车型的评定结果则均为及格甚至是差。其中奥迪A4，奔驰C级、雷克萨斯ES350和IS250/350仅仅获得了差的最低评级。据了解，参与测试的车辆全部为该车系的2012年新款车型。

  IIHS在公布测试结果的同时指出，引入此项新测试的目的是促使汽车制造商增强某些特定部位的强度，并将车身防撞结构由中央向两侧延伸。张扬
