LONDON (AFP) - British marine experts have found what they claim is a world first -- a six-legged octopus, or "hexapus," whom they have christened Henry.
The unique sea creature, which has two limbs fewer than a normal octopus, is believed to be the result of a birth defect rather than an accident, say his keepers at the Blackpool Sea Life Centre in northwest England."We've scoured the Internet and talked to lots of other aquariums and no-one has ever heard of another case of a six-legged octopus," said supervisor Carey Duckhouse.
Henry was discovered in a lobster pot off the north Wales coast two weeks ago, and was one of eight creatures that Sea Life staff picked up from a local marine zoo there -- where staff hadn't noticed his missing legs.
It was only when he attached himself to the inside of a glass tank that Sea Life staff noticed he was two limbs short of a full set. Octopuses are renowned for having three hearts and blue blood, but not usually six legs.
"He's a lovely little thing," said a spokeswoman, adding that he will go on display to the public later this month.

Strange New Creatures Found in AntarcticaBy Andrea Thompson, LiveScience Staff Writer
posted: 25 February 2007 12:11 pm ET

Several strange creatures including a psychedelic octopus have been found in frigid waters off Antarctica in one of the world’s most pristine marine environments.
Others resembled corals and shrimps. At least 30 appear to be new to science, said Julian Gutt, chief scientist of an expedition that was part of the International Polar Year research effort set to launch on March 1. The researchers catalogued about 1,000 species in an area of the Antarctic seabed where warming temperatures are believed to have caused the collapse of overlying ice shelves, affecting the marine life below.
“This is virgin geography,” said expedition member Gauthier Chapelle. “If we don’t find out what this area is like now following the collapse of the ice shelf, and what species are there, we won’t have any basis to know in 20 years’ time what has changed and how global warming has altered the marine ecosystem.”
The expedition also found sea lilies, sea cucumbers and sea urchins thriving on the sea floor—these species are usually found in much deeper waters where food is scarce, but the ice shelves probably made food scarcer than it would usually be at that shallow depth.
Images of the newfound creatures:
An opened seal
In the Weddell Sea off the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, 10,000 square kilometers of seabed was sealed off from the surface for thousands of years by the 100-m thick Larsen A and B ice shelves. When these ice shelves collapsed in recent years, the area was opened up to colonization by species that could not have survived there before [Original News Story].
The international team of scientists recently completed a 10-week expedition of the area. Using a remote operating vehicle, they were able to do the first comprehensive survey of life on the seabed. Before the ice shelves collapsed, the only access scientists had to the area was through holes drilled in the ice.
Ice shelves form when creeping glaciers reach the continent’s coast and begin to float on the ocean. They usually lose mass via icebergs that calve off and float out to sea gradually, but the Larsen A and B shelves both suddenly and surprisingly collapsed. Since 1974, a total of 13,500 square kilometers (about half the size of New Jersey) of ice shelves have disintegrated—a phenomenon linked to global warming, as temperatures have risen faster in Antarctica than anywhere else in world.
In general, the expedition found that animals were less abundant in the Larsen A and B areas compared to other areas of the Antarctic. Animals in the area were only one percent as abundant as other parts of the Weddell Sea, which Gutt suspects is somehow related to the availability of food.
New species?
One of the main aims of the expedition was to survey both indigenous life-forms and creatures that had moved in after the collapse to take advantage of the newly opened environment.
Gutt said that 95 percent of the animals the expedition found were probably indigenous and just 5 percent had moved in after the ice shelves collapsed, but even that small percentage indicated a shift in biodiversity and species composition in the area which will probably continue.
“Life at the sea floor obviously reacts very slowly to this very climactic change in the environmental conditions," Gutt said. “[It] needs hundreds to thousands of years until a new community has fully developed, if this will happen at all.”
One creature new to the neighborhood was the fast-growing, gelatinous sea squirt, which the scientists found in several dense patches.
Iceberg damage
The expedition also found scours created by icebergs that calved from the ice sheets and ran aground on the sea bed, destroying the life in the area, but the damage wasn’t as bad as expected.
“I expected more, because if there are thousands of icebergs disintegrated, or calved, in a very short period of only a few months, then I expected that everything would be destroyed. But it was not,” Gutt said.
The expedition actually found more evidence of disturbance outside the Larsen ice shelf area at points where many icebergs must pass.
But in the areas icebergs had destroyed, Gutt said, signs of life were returning.

Newly-discovered life: An exotic jellyfish

They look like alien spacecraft out of Star Trek but their origin is right here on Earth – or the Philippines to be precise.
The colourful creatures in the pictures are what scientists believe could be new marine life, discovered in the Celebes Sea off Tawi-Tawi, the south-east Asian nation's southernmost archipelago.
Dr Larry Madin led the Inner Space Speciation Project, which saw him and his crew boldly go where no one has gone before – to one of the world's deepest ocean basins in search of organisms isolated there for millions of years.

Dr Madin and his enterprising team of more than two dozen scientists explored to a depth of 2,800m (9,186ft) using a remotely operated camera.
They collected about 100 different specimens, including species possibly never discovered before. And what a bizarre sight some of them are.
The more outstanding specimens include a transparent sea cucumber that swims by bending its elongated body and a jet-black jellyfish.
One of the most striking creatures found was a spiny orange worm armed with ten squid-like tentacles.
Dr Madin, of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, said it would take a few weeks to determine whether the specimens were newly discovered.

Weird Deep-Sea Creatures Found in Atlantic (Pictures)August 27th, 2007 ·

Viperfish... 。。

With a fearsome grin fit for a movie monster, this viperfish is a real-life predator that lurks in one of the world’s most remote locations.
An international team of 31 researchers found this and other strange animals while exploring the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, an underwater mountain range that runs from Iceland to the Azores islands west of Portugal.

Over the course of five weeks, the team cataloged a host of exotic worms, colorful corals, unusual sea cucumbers, and weird fish. Clearly, viperfish has plenty to eat.
Many of the species found on the ridge are rare and had only been discovered in recent years, scientists said. At least one species found during the survey—a tiny crustacean called a seed shrimp—is thought to be new to science.
“It was like going to a new country,” said expedition leader Monty Priede of Britain’s University of Aberdeen.
The survey was coordinated by the Norway-based MAR-ECO project and the Census of Marine Life program.

Despite its delicate, decorated appearance, this jewel squid was found 1,650 lung-crushing feet (500 meters) beneath the surface of the North Atlantic.
Scientists on a recent deep-sea expedition found the squid, called Histioteuthis, along with an abundance of other species thought to be very rare, if not unknown, elsewhere.
Jewel squid are known for their mismatched eyes, one of which is larger than the other to scope for prey in the deep’s darkness.

With its polka-dot mantle and cartoonish expression, this glass squid brings out a lighter side of the inky ocean deep.
Scientists found the squid and other species while mapping more than 1,500 square miles (3,900 square kilometers) of an undersea mountain range in the North Atlantic.

Amphipod....

In an ironic strategy for survival, a tiny shrimplike creature called an amphipod shows everything it has, inside and out, in an attempt to disappear.
The unusual animal, called Phronima, is one of the many strange species recently found on an expedition to a deep-sea mountain range in the North Atlantic.
Many small deep-sea creatures are transparent, or nearly so, to better camouflage themselves in their murky surroundings, scientists say.

New weird species found in AntarcticaFebruary 22nd, 2008 ·
This otherworldly creature was among a haul of strange new fish trawled from the bottom of the oceans of Antarctica.

The eelpout Pachycara cousinsi is one of six previously unknown deep-sea fishes caught at depths of 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) during a British research expedition to the remote Crozet Islands in the Indian Ocean between Antarctica and Africa.

Team member Nicola King of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, recently announced the new species.
P. cousinsi is known from just a single, 1.35 foot (41 centimeter) long specimen caught during the 2005 to 2006 voyage. King named the fleshy-lipped species in honor of her fiancé, geophysicist Michael Cousins.
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” the marine biologist said.
—————————————————————-

The bright pink eelpout Pachycara priedei is one of six new fish species discovered during deep-sea trawls off the Crozet Islands in the oceans off Antarctica.
The species hunts along the ocean floor, seeking fish or whale carcasses where scavenging crustaceans gather, according to Peter Rask Møller, curator of fishes at the Natural History Museum of Denmark.
The fish’s tiny eyes may pick up bioluminescent signals from squid and shrimp, while its snout is studded with sensory pits for detecting the movement of prey in the darkness, Møller said.
Deep-sea eelpouts have watery, jelly-like flesh, probably due to their sluggish lifestyle and as an adaptation to pressures exerted on their bodies, he added.

Ocean Life Survey Reveals World of Deep-Sea Creatures

This heart-shaped jellyfish called a comb jelly was among thousands oftiny creatures captured in an expedition conducted in April to collectand catalog the world's deep-sea denizens.

This tiny, iridescent marine animal, called a zooplankton, is one of adozen new species identified by scientists during the Census of MarineLife expedition conducted April 2006. This species is a member of theshrimplike copepods, which are among the most abundant creatures onEarth and a vital food source for many fish and marine mammals, including whales.

This tiny sea snail, or pteropod, curiously resembles a Roman soldier'shelmet. The specimen was brought up from the deep sea during lastmonth's Census of Marine Life mission, conducted near the BermudaTriangle.

This tiny deep-sea snail called Atlanta peroni may be a bellwether of global warming.
Increased levels of carbon in the atmosphere, caused by burning fossilfuels among other things, is known to elevate the acidity of deep oceanwater. This spike in acid levels in turn inhibits snails from growingshells.
The Earth's oceans and other bodies of water act as enormouscarbon sinks that help regulate the planet's climate. Surface-dwellingplankton absorb carbon from the atmosphere and are consumed by animalscalled zooplankton, which come to the surface to feed and then returnto the depths.
This feeding cycle transports huge amounts of carbon from theatmosphere to the sea bottom, where the crushing pressure keeps ittrapped.
