MPHB at 52-wk high, soccer betting eyed

KUALA LUMPUR: Shares of MULTI-PURPOSE HOLDINGS BHD [] (MPHB) surged to a 52-week high of RM2.13 in intra-day trade on Thursday, March 25 on market talk its unit will benefit if soccer betting is legalised.

At 3.31pm, it was up 19 sen to RM2.11 with 13 million shares done while MPHB-CA added eight sen to 27 sen with 16 million units done.

Traders said the surge in the prices were due to speculation that MPHB's unit Magnum could benefit if the government allows soccer betting.

They added the company had also reported strong earnings in the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2009 with net profit at RM114.23 million while for the financial year ended, net profit was RM337.38 million. Its net asset per share was RM2.03.

MPHB is trading at price-to-earnings of 5.64 times at the previous days' closing price of RM1.92 while the average sector PE is 24.69 times.

MPHB has just broken above its strong horizontal resistance at RM2.00. In July last year, MPHB broke above its long-term downtrend line at RM1.90 & thereafter traded sideway for 8-9 months. The present breakout above RM2.00 could signal the start of a secular uptrend for MPHB. Its next resistance levels are RM2.25, RM2.70 & RM3.00.



Based on the above technical breakout, MPHB could be a good trading BUY.

MPHB jumps as CIMB Research sees more upside for property, gaming

KUALA LUMPUR: Shares of MULTI-PURPOSE HOLDINGS BHD [] jumped in early trade on Wednesday, March 31 after CIMB Equities Research said it saw more upside for the company.

At 9.21am, it was up 13 sen to RM2.35 with 4.96 million shares done.

CIMB Research said during a recent meeting with MPHB to get an update on its 51%-owned gaming subsidiary, Magnum Corp, it was pleasantly surprised to learn that MPHB will also be actively launching new property development projects this year, albeit on a small scale.

MPHB is also pushing for approvals of its prized mixed development project in downtown Kuala Lumpur, it said.

Meanwhile, with Tan Sri Vincent Tan roping in Singapore Technologies Telemedia as a partner in U Mobile under a RM1 billion investment commitment deal, “we think that MPHB will remain a passive investor in the telco space”, said CIMB Research.

“More importantly, investors seeking a share of Magnum Corp's increasingly popular 4D Jackpot game can only do so via its parent given that a relisting of Magnum Corp is unlikely over the short term.

“We estimate that MPHB is trading at a 45% discount to its SOP value of RM4.06/share. Applying the typical 20-30% discount accorded to holding companies, we estimate that the stock could be worth RM2.84-RM3.24. This suggests 28-46% upside from current levels,” it said.
